How car rental pricing works in Ghana

What affects the price

Self-drive or with a driver

A car with a driver usually costs more per day than self-drive, because the price covers the driver’s time. Some firms only rent with a driver, and some only offer self-drive to certain customers. Read self-drive or chauffeur.

Type of vehicle

A small saloon is usually the cheapest. SUVs, 4x4s such as a Prado or Land Cruiser, luxury cars and minibuses or Coaster buses cost more. Ask for the exact model, not just “an SUV”.

Number of days

Many firms quote a day rate and some offer weekly or monthly rates for longer hires. Ask whether a longer booking changes the daily price.

Within Accra or outside

Many price lists separate trips within Accra from trips outside the city or to other regions. Long trips can also mean extra charges for the driver’s overnight stay. Say exactly where you are going when you ask.

Fuel

Some prices include fuel and some don’t. If fuel isn’t included, ask how it works: full-to-full, or paid as you go.

Driver allowance, overtime and overnight

When you hire with a driver, ask whether the price includes the driver’s allowance and meals, the daily hours covered, the overtime charge after those hours, and who pays for the driver’s accommodation on overnight trips.

Deposit

Self-drive hires usually need a refundable security deposit. Ask how much it is, how you pay it, and when and how it is returned.

Airport pickup

An airport pickup is often priced as a separate trip, and some firms charge differently by drop-off area. Ask whether parking and tolls are included.

Season and demand

Demand rises around Christmas and Detty December, Easter and big events, so cars sell out and prices can change. Book early and get the price confirmed in writing. See car rental for Christmas in Ghana.

Mileage, tolls and insurance

Ask whether mileage is unlimited, whether road tolls are included, and what the insurance covers if there is an accident or damage, including your excess.

How to ask for a quote

  1. Open a firm’s page on GhanaCarHire and check the prices and terms it publishes.
  2. Send the firm your dates, pickup and return places, where you’re going, the number of passengers and bags, and whether you want a driver or self-drive.
  3. Ask for the total price and exactly what it includes.
  4. Compare two or three firms on the same details.

What to confirm in writing

Pay deposits only into an account in the firm’s business name, and never pay a stranger who contacts you first. Read how to avoid car hire scams in Ghana and what the Verified badge means.

Firms that show prices on their page

These firms publish prices on their GhanaCarHire page, as they provide them. Always confirm the current price with the firm.

Questions

How much does it cost to rent a car in Ghana?

It depends on the vehicle, whether you hire with a driver, how many days, where you are going, and whether fuel is included. Prices change often, so GhanaCarHire doesn’t publish a single price for Ghana. Open each firm’s page to see the prices the firm itself publishes, then ask the firm for a written quote for your dates.

Is it cheaper to hire with a driver or self-drive?

Self-drive is usually cheaper per day, but it needs a deposit, a valid licence and confidence on Ghana’s roads. With a driver, check whether the driver’s allowance, overtime and overnight costs are included.

Do car rental prices go up in December?

Demand is high around Christmas and Detty December, so book early and get the price and vehicle confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.

What should I get in writing?

The vehicle, dates, what is included (driver, fuel, tolls), deposit and refund terms, insurance, cancellation terms and the total price. Pay only into an account in the firm’s business name.
