Car Hire & Rental in Kumasi with a Driver: Airport, City and Day Trips

8 min read · Last checked: 16 October 2026

Quick answer: For car rental in Kumasi with a driver, book a local firm before you land at Prempeh I International Airport (code KMS). One Kumasi firm listed on GhanaCarHire, TL Ghana, publishes a With Driver (Chauffeur) rate of GH¢700–1,300 a day, with driving hours of 5am to 9pm (TL Ghana services page, checked 16 October 2026). Dorfrimps Car Rentals publishes daily rates of GH₵700–1,600 and offers self-drive or chauffeur-driven hire, but its site does not say whether a driver costs extra. Most other Kumasi firms quote on request. Use a driver for day trips such as Lake Bosomtwe and Bonwire, and be back in the city before dark.

This guide is about hiring a car with a driver in Kumasi: meeting you at the airport, moving you around the city, and taking you out on day trips. It is written for anyone arriving in the Ashanti Region, whether you are a tourist, on business, with an NGO, a student, or a Ghanaian coming home for a funeral or a wedding. For a wider overview of Kumasi and Takoradi, including self-drive, see our Kumasi and Takoradi car hire guide.

Why hire a driver in Kumasi?

Kumasi is the capital of the Ashanti Region, and a driver who knows it saves you a lot of time. Three practical reasons stand out:

  • Arrival. A driver can meet your flight and take you straight to your hotel or family home, so you are not negotiating with strangers at the kerb.
  • Paperwork. Self-drive terms can be strict. TL Ghana, for example, publishes a minimum age of 35 for self-drive, plus a Ghana Card and digital address, which many visitors will not have. A car with a driver avoids that.
  • Roads outside the city. The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) says roads can be in poor condition, particularly in rural areas, and advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark. A local driver knows the back roads and can plan the day around daylight.

If you are still deciding whether to drive yourself, the self-drive section of our Kumasi and Takoradi guide covers the trade-offs.

Arriving at Prempeh I International Airport (KMS)

Kumasi's airport is Prempeh I International Airport. The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority lists it with the IATA code KMS (ICAO DGSI), so tickets and booking sites may show "KMS" rather than the full name. The new terminal was commissioned on 10 May 2024, when the former Kumasi Airport was named after the Asante King Prempeh I, according to the Ghana News Agency.

Ghana Airports Company says the airport is currently served by two domestic carriers, Africa World Airlines and PassionAir. Most people flying in from abroad therefore connect through Accra. Check the airlines' own schedules when you book.

The airport page does not list car rental desks, so arrange your pickup in advance. Several Kumasi firms listed on GhanaCarHire are based around the Airport Roundabout area, including TL Ghana and Dorfrimps (Dichemso, near Airport Roundabout). Dorfrimps and FBK Car Rentals both say on their own websites that they offer airport pickups.

To book a pickup:

  1. Send the firm your flight number, arrival time, number of passengers and bags, and the full drop-off address.
  2. Ask for a written price for the transfer, and whether waiting time is included if your flight is late.
  3. Get the driver's name, phone number and number plate before you fly, and meet only that driver.
  4. If you want the driver for the rest of the day, agree the day rate at the same time.

Driver day rates from Kumasi firms (sourced)

Few Kumasi firms publish prices for a car with a driver. The table shows what we could verify, with the date we checked. These are the firms' own published figures, not quotes. Ask for a written total for your dates.

Firm (listed on GhanaCarHire) What it publishes (checked 16 Oct 2026)
TL Ghana, Airport Roundabout With Driver (Chauffeur): GH¢700–1,300 / day, driving hours 5am–9pm. Corporate/long-term, self-drive and pick-and-drop pricing "varies by vehicle".
Dorfrimps Car Rentals, Dichemso Daily rates from GH₵700 (Toyota Corolla) and GH₵900 (Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander) to GH₵1,200 (Toyota Highlander) and GH₵1,600 (Toyota Land Cruiser). It offers self-drive and chauffeur-driven options, but does not say whether these rates include a driver.
FBK Car Rentals, Baamoah Li Road Self-drive and chauffeur-driven options; prices on request.

Other Kumasi listings on GhanaCarHire either publish self-drive or "from" vehicle prices without mentioning a driver, or no prices at all. Accra-based Atlas Rent-A-Car also lists a Kumasi branch and specialises in hire with drivers, with prices on request. We have not invented a typical rate where none is published.

What to ask before you agree a price:

  • Is the driver included, and for how many hours a day? TL Ghana's published hours are 5am to 9pm, so ask what happens if a wedding or dinner runs late.
  • Is fuel included, and is there a distance limit for trips outside Kumasi?
  • For trips of more than one day, who pays for the driver's meals and overnight accommodation?
  • Is the price for the car and driver only, or does it include parking and tolls?
  • How much deposit is needed, and to which account? Pay only an account in the firm's name.

Getting around Kumasi with a driver

In the city, a driver is most useful when parking is hard or you have several stops. Popular stops include Manhyia Palace Museum and Kejetia Market. A driver can drop you at the entrance and come back when you call, instead of you circling for parking.

For business visitors, a full day with a driver also makes back-to-back meetings much easier. Give the driver your schedule and addresses the evening before, and agree a pickup time for each stop.

Day trips from Kumasi with a driver

These trips are where a car and driver really earn their keep. Plan to leave in the morning and be back in Kumasi before dark, in line with UK Foreign Office advice on road travel after dark. Confirm the route and timings with your driver on the day.

Lake Bosomtwe

Lake Bosomtwe lies about 30 km south-east of Kumasi, in an ancient meteorite impact crater, according to Graphic Online. The same report describes reaching Abonu, a lakeside community, via Kuntenase, turning off the Accra–Kumasi road at Ejisu. Lakeside resorts make it a good spot for a long lunch. Ask your driver to wait, or agree a return time.

Bonwire kente village

Bonwire, in the Ejisu Municipality, is widely recognised as the birthplace of Ghana's handwoven kente cloth, as the Ghana News Agency reported in July 2026, and it is still a working kente-weaving community. Because it is on the Ejisu side of the city, it pairs naturally with a stop on the way to or from the lake.

Asante Traditional Buildings (UNESCO World Heritage)

UNESCO lists the Asante Traditional Buildings as a World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1980. The site is a group of ten traditional shrine buildings, most of them north-east of Kumasi (including Ejisu Besease), with Patakro to the south. They are spread out and some are in villages, so a driver who knows the area is the easiest way to see one or two of them in a day.

Longer trips

For Accra or the coast, see our Accra to Kumasi road trip guide. The N6 between Accra and Kumasi is about 250 km, according to the Ghana Highway Authority. A one-way trip with a driver is possible, but expect to pay for the driver's return journey, and agree that in writing.

How this guide differs from our Kumasi overview

Our Kumasi and Takoradi car hire guide compares the two cities and covers self-drive, one-way hire and a three-city loop. This guide focuses only on Kumasi with a driver: the airport pickup, published driver day rates and day trips.
