Homowo Festival in Accra: Dates and Getting Around
Quick answer: Homowo is the harvest festival of the Ga people of Accra. In 2026 the main Ga Mashie Homowo celebration was on Saturday 8 August, followed by Ŋɔɔ Wala on Sunday 9 August, according to the Asere Kotopon Stool's programme reported by The Herald. Different Ga towns celebrate on different dates. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
What is Homowo?
The Asere Mantse, Nii Asere Boi IV, described Homowo at the 2026 launch as a festival that commemorates the victory of the Ga people over famine. Kpokpoi, the festival dish, is sprinkled in homes across Ga Mashie. The Asere Kotopon Stool alone is responsible for sprinkling it in about 150 homes. The celebration attracts visitors from the diaspora and the diplomatic community.

The Ga Homowo Carnival ran from 6 to 9 August 2026 in Jamestown and Bukom, with Soobii (homecoming) on the Thursday, the Twin Festival on the Friday, the climax on Saturday 8 August and a thanksgiving concert on the Sunday. Teshie, Nungua, La and other Ga towns hold their own Homowo on their own dates, so check locally.

- Expect crowds in Jamestown and Bukom on the main day. Plan to be dropped off rather than park.
