Uber, Bolt, Yango or Car Rental & Hire in Accra?

3 min read · Last checked: 18 October 2026

Quick answer: Uber, Bolt and Yango all operate in Accra, and they're handy for short trips around the city. Car rental or hire with a driver is usually the better choice for a late-night airport arrival, a full day of meetings, a group with luggage, or a day trip out of Accra, because the same driver stays with you and you agree the price and plan in advance. Whichever you use, check the driver and car before you get in, as the UK FCDO advises.

What's available in Accra

  • Uber has an Accra airport pickup page for Kotoka International Airport (ACC), and says Uber Reserve lets you book an airport pickup up to 90 days ahead.
  • Bolt says it operates across Accra, and its support pages say an airport fee is added to trips that start or end at Terminals 2 and 3.
  • Yango says on its Ghana site that it operates in Accra and Kumasi, and shows the price before you ride.

You'll need mobile data, so get a local SIM or use airport Wi-Fi when you land.

When a ride-hailing app works well

  • Short hops around the city in daylight
  • Single trips when you don't need a car waiting
  • Travelling light, alone or as a couple

When car rental or hire with a driver is better

  • Late or early airport arrivals: a pre-booked driver can track your flight and meet you inside arrivals. See Accra International Airport pickup and our arrival and pickup guide.
  • A day of meetings or errands: one driver waits for you between stops, instead of booking ride after ride.
  • Groups and luggage: you can book a 7-seater, a minibus or a bus.
  • Day trips out of Accra: for example the Accra to Cape Coast road trip. The FCDO advises travelling in daylight on longer trips, and suggests pre-booked vehicles from reputable companies outside the main towns.
  • Peak season: around Christmas and Detty December, demand is high everywhere, so booking a car with a driver in advance gives you certainty.

Safety tips for any ride

The UK FCDO says there have been isolated crimes in all types of taxis, including app-based services, and that app-based drivers are not centrally licensed. Bolt's support pages describe a DVLA private hire vehicle licence process for its drivers. Either way:

  • Check that the car, number plate and driver match the app before you get in.
  • Share your trip with someone, and sit in the back.
  • Avoid travelling alone in taxis after dark, as the FCDO advises.
  • At the airport, confirm a pickup driver's identity: the FCDO warns of impostors posing as drivers in arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Uber operates in Accra, including pickups at Kotoka International Airport.

Is Bolt or Uber better in Accra?

Both operate across the city. Compare the price shown in each app for your trip, and check the driver and car before you get in.

Should I use Uber from Accra airport?

It works, but for a late arrival, lots of luggage or a first visit, a pre-booked driver who meets you in arrivals is simpler.
