How Much Does Car Hire Cost in Accra? A 2026 Price Guide

9 min read · Facts checked 13 October 2026

Quick answer: Self-drive car hire in Accra typically costs around $72–$88 a day for a small or mid-size car, based on KAYAK search data (checked 13 October 2026), with SUVs averaging about $164–$166 a day and luxury cars about $237 a day. A car with a driver is usually priced as an all-in day rate: one published Accra example is $140 a day including driver and 100 km of fuel, while another travel agency advertises chauffeured cars from GH₵600 a day. Prices rise sharply in December.

Planning a trip home or a first visit to Ghana, the first question is nearly always the same: what will a car actually cost? The honest answer is that it depends on three things: whether you drive yourself, the size of vehicle, and when you travel. Below, we've gathered only published, sourced figures so you can budget with confidence.

Self-drive prices in Accra (international brands)

KAYAK aggregates searches across the agencies it covers in Accra (Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar and keddy by Europcar among them). On the date we checked, its Accra page showed:

Car type Typical daily price (KAYAK)
Small (e.g. VW Polo or similar) ~$72–$74
Medium (e.g. Hyundai Elantra or similar) ~$80
Pickup truck ~$96
Large ~$149
Van ~$163
SUV (e.g. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or similar) ~$164–$166
Luxury ~$237

KAYAK also notes:

  • The cheapest month is May (average about $82/day) and the dearest is July (about $90/day).
  • Booking around 42 days ahead tends to find below-average prices.
  • The cheapest deal found by a user in the preceding 48 hours was $66/day for a small car.

Chauffeur-driven prices

Many visitors, especially those arriving for a wedding, a funeral or the festive season, prefer a car with a driver. Local firms usually quote this as a day rate that bundles the driver, sometimes with fuel.

Published examples we found:

  • Transparent Rentals (Accra): $140/day for a full day (10 hours) within Greater Accra, including driver, 100 km of fuel, Wi-Fi and water. Airport pickups from $65, half days from $80, and trips outside Accra from $190. Extra distance is $0.50/km.
  • Secure Travel and Tours (Accra travel agency): chauffeured cars advertised "from GH₵600/day" in its Detty December 2026 guide.
  • Nii Plants and Car Rentals (Dansoman): its website shows rates of roughly GH₵715–1,320 (about $105–170) depending on vehicle.
  • AccraDrive: lists self-drive sedans from roughly GH₵800–1,600/day and a Land Cruiser Prado at GH₵1,400–1,800/day. The two figures appear on different pages of its own site, so confirm with the firm.

What pushes the price up?

Season

December is Ghana's busiest period for diaspora visitors. Ride-hailing surge pricing of 2–3x on busy nights is reported by Secure Travel and Tours. Chauffeur and self-drive fleets tend to sell out, so book early.

Vehicle type

SUVs are the most popular rental category in Accra, according to KAYAK, and cost roughly twice as much as a small car. For city driving, a saloon is usually ample. For trips upcountry, many travellers prefer the higher clearance of an SUV.

What's included

Always ask whether the price includes:

  • Fuel, or a daily kilometre allowance
  • Driver's hours, and any overtime or overnight allowance for the driver on trips outside Accra
  • Insurance, and the excess (deductible) you would pay after an accident
  • Airport pickup fees
  • Security deposit: how much it is and how it is refunded

Budget examples (built from published figures)

  • Five days self-drive, small car, outside peak season: about 5 × $72–80 ≈ $360–400 before fuel and extras (KAYAK averages).
  • Airport pickup plus three full chauffeur days in Accra: $65 + (3 × $140) = $485 at Transparent Rentals' published rates.

These are illustrations, not quotes. Always get a written price.

Tips for getting a fair price

  1. Compare like with like. A $72 self-drive rate and a $140 chauffeur rate are different products.
  2. Get the total in writing, including deposit, fuel policy and excess.
  3. Book 4–6 weeks ahead in line with KAYAK's guidance, and earlier for December.
  4. Pay a deposit only to a verified business. See our guide to avoiding car hire scams in Ghana.

What the local market publishes

KAYAK only covers a handful of international brands. On the day we checked, it listed six agencies across nine Accra locations, five of them at the airport. Most of Accra's car hire happens elsewhere: through small local firms that sell on their own websites, on Instagram and, above all, on WhatsApp. Their prices are harder to compare, but a few do publish them. Here's a snapshot from firms' own websites, gathered for our directory research in October 2026:

Firm (area) What it publishes Notes
F and P Car Rentals (Accra) GH₵900–3,000/day Self-drive and chauffeur
WopeCar (Osu) GH₵1,050–2,500/day A marketplace listing other owners' cars, not a fleet
Alabaster Car Rentals & Tours (Accra) GH₵1,033–3,156 Chauffeur-driven and tours
Nii Plants and Car Rentals (Dansoman) GH₵715–1,320 / $105–170 Says it has traded since 2007
AccraDrive (Ablekuma) Sedans GH₵800–1,600/day; Prado GH₵1,400–1,800 Figures differ between its own pages

Two things jump out. First, local firms price mostly in cedis, the international brands in dollars, so you'll need the day's exchange rate to compare fairly. Second, the ranges are wide because the same firm might rent you a ten-year-old saloon or a brand-new Land Cruiser. A headline "from" price tells you very little until you know the exact car.

Self-drive vs chauffeur: a worked example

Say you're in Accra for seven days. You want an airport pickup, a day trip to Cape Coast, and the rest of the week around the city visiting family. Here's how the published numbers stack up.

Self-drive, mid-size car. Seven days at KAYAK's medium-car average of around $80 comes to about $560. Add fuel for a Cape Coast round trip (roughly 330 km) plus city driving, and any excess cover you choose. You also do the driving, the parking and the route-finding, including the Kasoa traffic.

Chauffeur, using Transparent Rentals' published rates. An airport pickup at $65, a Cape Coast trip from $190 and five Accra days at $140 comes to $955, with fuel allowances built in.

So the chauffeur route costs roughly $400 more for the week in this example. Whether that's worth it depends on how you feel about Accra traffic, how many people you're carrying, and whether you'd rather spend the journey on your phone catching up with relatives. For a lot of visitors it's an easy call. For confident drivers who know the city, self-drive is genuine value.

The small print that changes the price

The daily rate is only part of the story. Before you compare two quotes, look for these.

Distance allowances. Transparent Rentals, for instance, publishes 30 km on an airport transfer, 50 km on a half day and 100 km on a full day, with $0.50 per kilometre beyond that. Other firms don't publish theirs at all, which is exactly why you should ask.

Cancellation terms. Some firms are strict. Transparent Rentals states that bookings are final and non-refundable once made, because it holds the car and driver for you. That's a fair policy, but you want to know it before you pay, not after your flight changes.

Automatics. KAYAK notes that automatic cars are widely available in Accra but can carry an extra charge. Ask, if you only drive automatic.

The driver's costs on overnight trips. On a trip to Kumasi or Cape Coast with an overnight stay, many firms add an allowance for the driver's room and meals. It's reasonable, but it should be in the quote.

Tips. Not compulsory, but customary. Secure Travel and Tours suggests GH₵50–100 a day for a driver.

When to book

KAYAK's data points to booking around six weeks ahead for a below-average price. For December, start earlier. Secure Travel and Tours' Detty December timeline suggests locking in chauffeured cars by October. Honestly, if you're arriving between mid-December and New Year and you need an SUV or a van, book as soon as your flights are confirmed. Those are the vehicles that disappear first.

Where your money goes: international brand or local firm?

The international brands at the airport (Avis, Budget, Hertz and Europcar all appear on KAYAK's Accra page) give you a familiar booking process, a card payment in dollars and terms you can read before you land. KAYAK's most-used Accra location is Avis at 35 Soula Close in Airport Residential, about two miles from the centre. The trade-off is choice and price. The fleet is limited, and the average rating KAYAK users gave Accra agencies was a modest 6.4 out of 10 from only five reviews, which is too small a sample to read much into.

Local firms are where most of the variety lies: older budget saloons, new Chinese-built SUVs, Land Cruisers and Prados, vans for big families, and drivers who know your grandmother's village. You'll usually pay in cedis or dollars by mobile money or transfer, and you'll need to do a little more checking up front. Our directory exists precisely to make that checking easier.

There's no right answer. If you value a brand name and a desk at the airport, the internationals are there. If you want the best car for your money, or a driver for a week, the local market is deeper.

A quick budgeting checklist

Before you settle on a number, run through this:

  1. The daily rate for the exact car, in the currency you'll pay in.
  2. Fuel: included, capped or extra.
  3. The distance allowance and the cost per extra kilometre.
  4. Driver hours, overtime, and overnight allowances for trips outside Accra.
  5. Insurance: what's covered and the excess.
  6. Deposit: how much, how it's paid, when it's returned.
  7. Airport pickup or drop-off fees.
  8. Cancellation terms.
  9. A sensible tip for your driver.

If a quote doesn't cover all nine, ask. It's not rude; good firms expect it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average daily cost of car hire in Accra?

KAYAK puts the average for a small car at around $72–74 a day and the all-car-type average at about $131–133 (checked 13 October 2026). Elsewhere on the same page it quotes a yearly average of about $88. SUVs average around $165.

Is it cheaper to hire a car with a driver in Ghana?

Not usually cheaper, but often better value. A chauffeur day rate such as $140 (Transparent Rentals, fuel included) covers the driving and parking, so you do not have to handle Accra traffic yourself.

It varies. Self-drive rentals are normally fuel-not-included. Some chauffeur firms include a fuel or distance allowance: Transparent Rentals, for example, includes 100 km a day.

Can I pay in pounds or dollars?

Many local firms quote in US dollars and cedis. Confirm the currency, the payment method and any card fees before you pay.
