Detty December Transport Guide: Getting Around Accra in Peak Season

7 min read · Facts checked 13 October 2026

Quick answer: During Detty December (roughly mid-December to early January), Accra's roads are at their busiest and ride-hailing fares can surge to 2–3x on event nights, according to Secure Travel and Tours. The smoothest way to get around is to pre-book a chauffeur-driven car for event nights and your airport transfers, ideally by October. Published chauffeur rates start from about GH₵600/day (Secure Travel and Tours) or $140/day all-in (Transparent Rentals). Allow up to 90 minutes to cross town on event evenings.

Detty December is the season the whole diaspora talks about: concerts, beach parties, weddings and family reunions. It's also when getting from A to B in Accra becomes the hardest part of the trip. This guide helps you plan.

Why December transport is different

  • Demand surges. Ghanaian news outlet News Ghana reported that Bolt saw airport trips rise by 6.8% between 20 November and 4 December, and described festive demand pushing fares up while traffic limited drivers' earnings.
  • Traffic. Secure Travel and Tours advises allowing 90 minutes to cross town on event evenings, and names Spintex, Tetteh Quarshie and Liberation Road as gridlock hotspots.
  • Late nights. It also warns that finding a ride at 3am after a big festival "is nearly impossible", so pre-book your return.

Visitor-number projections circulate widely. One travel agency's guide cites a projection of over 1.2 million international visitors, attributed to the Ghana Tourism Authority, but we have not been able to verify that figure with the GTA directly.

Your options compared

Chauffeur-driven car (recommended for event nights)

  • Pros: guaranteed pickup, no surge, the driver waits, and it is safer for groups.
  • Published prices: from GH₵600/day (Secure Travel and Tours); $140/day all-in within Greater Accra (Transparent Rentals).
  • Book by: October. Secure Travel and Tours' 2026 booking timeline suggests locking in chauffeured cars and day trips by then.

Ride-hailing (Bolt, Uber, Yango)

  • Pros: convenient for short daytime hops.
  • Cons: surge pricing from 6pm on Fridays, Saturdays and event nights (Secure Travel and Tours), and long waits after events.

Self-drive

  • Pros: freedom, if you know Accra well.
  • Cons: traffic, parking at venues and security. The FCDO advises keeping windows up and doors locked when stationary, and reports more frequent burglaries in some areas over Christmas.
  • Prices: KAYAK's Accra averages (checked October 2026) are around $72–80/day for small and medium cars, with SUVs around $165. Expect stock to be tight in December.

Planning by the day

  1. Arrival day: pre-booked airport transfer with verified driver details. See our airport guide.
  2. Event nights: chauffeur on standby with an agreed return time.
  3. Day trips: a full-day car for Cape Coast or Aburi. Transparent Rentals publishes trips outside Accra from $190.
  4. Quiet days: ride-hailing for short daytime journeys.

Booking timeline

When What to book
By September Flights and accommodation (if not already)
By October Chauffeur, airport transfers, day trips
November Reconfirm drivers, share flight numbers, agree pickup codes
December Keep your driver's number saved, and pre-book every late return

Group travel tips

  • For groups of four or more, consider a van. KAYAK lists vans at around $163/day in Accra.
  • Agree one point of contact in your group for the driver.
  • Clarify overtime rates in writing, because event nights run late.

Safety in peak season

The FCDO advises being particularly careful after nightfall, avoiding walking alone, and using pre-arranged transport where possible. Secure Travel and Tours also warns about fake event tickets and "pop-up agents" at the airport.

The events that move the crowds

Transport in December revolves around the big nights. Secure Travel and Tours' guide lists the events confirmed or expected for 15 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. As always, check the organisers' own sites, since dates do move:

Event When (as listed) Where
Detty Rave 27 December Polo Beach Club
AfroFuture Festival 28–30 December El Wak Sports Stadium
Tidal Rave 30 December Pram Pram
Afro Nation Ghana Late December Laboma Beach, Accra

The practical point is that the city's busiest nights cluster between Christmas and New Year. If you're going to more than one event, you'll want transport sorted for each, and you'll want a plan for getting home, not just getting there. Pram Pram, for example, is well outside central Accra, and finding a ride back late at night is exactly the scenario the guide warns about.

Where you stay changes everything

Your neighbourhood decides how much time you spend in traffic. Secure Travel and Tours ranks a few favourites. Cantonments and Airport Residential are quiet and close to many upscale venues. East Legon is good for food but 25–40 minutes from Laboma Beach. Labone and Osu put you in the thick of the nightlife, and Labadi suits you if Afro Nation is the main event.

If you're staying further out, budget more for transport and more time for every journey. It sounds obvious, but a 25-minute hop in November can easily take an hour in the last week of December.

Getting the most from a chauffeur in December

If you're booking a driver for the festive period, a little organisation makes a big difference.

Give the firm your full programme in advance: arrival flight, events, dinners and day trips. Agree what happens on late nights. A driver who started at 9am can't reasonably work until 4am without a rest or a handover, and some firms charge overtime after a set number of hours. Ask about this up front so there's no awkward conversation outside a beach club at 2am.

Agree a pickup point for after each event. Big venues can be chaotic at closing time. Pick a landmark a short walk away from the main exit, where your driver can actually stop.

Keep one person in your group as the contact. Five people messaging the same driver is a recipe for missed pickups.

Day trips in December

December is also when many diaspora visitors finally make the trip to Cape Coast, Aburi or Kumasi. Secure Travel and Tours says Aburi Botanical Gardens is about 45 minutes from Accra, and that Cape Coast and Elmina work best as an overnight. Our Accra to Cape Coast guide and Accra to Kumasi guide cover the routes.

Our suggestion is to schedule day trips on weekday mornings rather than the day after a big event, when you'll be tired and the roads out of Accra will be busy with people heading home for Christmas.

Keeping your money safe

Peak season brings out opportunists. Secure Travel and Tours warns about fake event tickets sold in WhatsApp groups and recommends buying only from official platforms. The same logic applies to transport: be wary of "chauffeur packages" advertised in group chats by people you can't verify, especially if they want the full payment up front. Our scams guide has a simple checklist.

The FCDO also notes that burglaries in areas popular with the international community, including Airport Residential, Cantonments and Ridge, happen more often over Christmas. Lock up properly, use the safe, and don't leave valuables visible in a parked car.

Arriving in December

Plenty of the stress in a Detty December trip happens in the first hour. Afternoon and evening arrivals at Accra's Terminal 3 can mean longer immigration queues, and ride-hail demand at the airport rises over the season. Book your transfer before you fly, and see our airport guide for meeting your driver safely.

If you're travelling as a family with children, add child seats to your booking request early; they're not standard in every car, and December is the worst time to be hunting for one.

Finally, keep some flexibility in your plans. December in Accra rarely runs exactly to schedule, and the visitors who enjoy it most are the ones who've left a little slack in each day.
