Aburi Botanical Gardens Day Trip from Accra by Car: Route, Timings and Car Rental & Hire

9 min read · Last checked: 2 November 2026

Quick answer: For an Aburi Botanical Gardens day trip from Accra, you drive north on the N4, past Oyarifa and Ayi Mensah, and up the Akuapem hills to Aburi. The Ghana Tourism Authority calls it "just an hour's drive from Accra" and puts the gardens about 28 km from the capital. No official road distance, door-to-door drive time, opening hours or entry fee is published, so we don't quote any. Leave Accra early, agree the driver's waiting time in writing and come down the hill before dark.

This guide covers a day trip to Aburi Botanical Gardens from Accra by car: the road up the hill, what official sources say about distance and time, the state of the gardens in 2026, what else is nearby and how to book car hire & rental with a driver. If you're going on to Koforidua, our Accra to Koforidua guide covers the rest of the N4.

The route: the N4 up the Akuapem hills

The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table lists the N4 as Accra–Bunso, 110 km. Aburi is on it, early on. The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly's 2026 budget says "the main Accra-Koforidua highway passes through Aburi".

The GHA's 2020 trunk road maps show the way:

  1. Leave Accra on the N4, heading north past Oyarifa and Ayi Mensah (Greater Accra map).
  2. Climb into the Eastern Region past Gyankama to Aburi (Eastern Region map).
  3. The N4 carries on north through Obosomase, Tutu and Mampong to Mamfe, the way to Koforidua.

The climb from Ayi Mensah is a steep, winding hill road. In October 2019, Citi Newsroom reported that the GHA closed the Accra-bound lane between Peduase Lodge and Ayi Mensah after rockfalls. In April 2026, a University of Ghana lecturer told Citi that heavy, unregulated building on the slopes between Ayi Mensah and Aburi could make them unstable in heavy rain. We found no 2026 closure notice for the road as of 2 November 2026.

Another way up: Kitase. Citi Newsroom reported on 22 September 2026 that work would resume on 24 September on the 23 km Dome–Kwabenya–Berekuso–Kitase road, which links those communities to Peduase and Aburi. The road was then about 27% complete, after years of delay, and the contractor had 18 months to finish. We found no later report on progress, so expect a rough, unfinished road if your driver takes this way.

How far is Aburi from Accra, and how long does it take?

There's no official Accra–Aburi road distance. The Ghana Tourism Authority's Eastern Region page says the gardens are "about 28km from the capital – Accra", and the National Commission on Culture gives the same figure. Neither says it's a road distance or where in Accra it's measured from. The GHA table only gives the whole N4 (110 km). We don't use route-planner or blog figures.

There's no official drive time either. The GTA describes the gardens as "just an hour's drive from Accra". That's a tourism description, not a timed figure. Things that will affect it:

  • Traffic leaving Accra. Start early, especially at weekends and on public holidays.
  • The hill. The climb from Ayi Mensah is steep and winding.
  • Diversions. At the Aburi Odwira festival in November 2025, the Aburihene told Graphic Online that works on the Ofankor–Nsawam road had pushed some drivers through Aburi to Nsawam, wearing down that road. He also asked for repairs to the Adamorobe–Aburi and Kwabenya–Berekuso–Kitase roads.

The gardens: what official sources say

The GTA says the botanical gardens at Aburi opened in 1890. Its Eastern Region page describes:

  • An entrance "adorned with beautiful Royal Palm trees" (the avenue in the photo above)
  • A wide variety of traditional and medicinal plants
  • A silk cotton tree, described as the sole survivor of the forest that once covered the Aburi hills
  • Tranquil paths, birds and butterflies, and "a popular excursion for Ghana's city dwellers"

The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly's 2026–2029 budget, published by the Ministry of Finance, says Aburi is the Assembly's capital and that the gardens attract "over 35,000 visitors annually". It names other attractions in the municipality: Aburi Craft Village, Oboadaka Waterfalls, Papaye Recreational Centre, Aburi Eco Resort, forest reserves and medicinal plant sites. Graphic Online reported in June 2026 that Aburi Botanical Garden is among the ten most visited sites in the GTA's 2025 tourism report.

In April 2026, the Akuapem South Municipal Chief Executive told Graphic Online the gardens have ancient trees and chalets where people can picnic, and pointed to the Aburi Crafts Village for wood carvings and the Ayi Mensah to Peduase walkway (4,348 steps) for walkers. He also said the ridge is known for its cooler weather.

Opening hours and entry fees

The website of the Department of Parks and Gardens, which GNA reports is involved in the restoration plan, returned an error when we checked on 2 November 2026. We found no official opening hours or entry fees from the department, the GTA or the Assembly. Some websites list hours and fees, but they aren't official sources, so we don't repeat them. Ask your hire firm or hotel to check before you go, and allow time to get back down the hill before dark.

The gardens in 2026: what to expect

Recent reports describe a site that needs care:

  • January 2026: illegal tree felling. The Ghana News Agency reported that two people, including the gardens' curator, were arrested over unauthorised tree cutting. The Assembly said a technical team was assessing the damage and a restoration plan would be drawn up with the Department of Parks and Gardens.
  • April 2026: "not in good shape". The Municipal Chief Executive said on Citi TV's Eyewitness News that visitor numbers and facilities had sharply declined and staffing was a challenge, and that the Assembly had asked central government for support (reported by Channel One News).
  • October 2026: minister's visit. GNA reported on 1 October 2026 that the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts had toured the gardens, the Aburi Craft Village and Papaye, was briefed on the state of the trees and called for regular maintenance. She said the gardens don't fall directly under her ministry, and that a list of roads to tourist sites needing urgent work had been submitted.
  • The Assembly's own budget lists "undeveloped and poorly maintained tourism sites" among the municipality's key challenges.

We found no official announcement of a closure, new opening hours or a completed restoration as of 2 November 2026.

Fees and unofficial charges

In May 2025, a Citi Newsroom writer described paying the entrance fee, then being asked by vendors for different prices for tables and chairs, and by another person for an extra "garden fee". The UK FCDO warns visitors in Ghana to beware of self-appointed officials trying to charge fees to take pictures at well-known sites. Pay only at the official gate, and ask what the fee covers before you hand over money.

Making a day of it

Aburi works well as a half-day or full-day trip. The Assembly's budget and GNA's report of the minister's tour both name the Aburi Craft Village and Papaye nearby. Tell your driver in advance which stops you want, so the hours you book cover them.

If you want a longer day in the Eastern Region, the N4 goes on to Koforidua, and from there you can reach the seasonal Boti Falls. That's a much longer day, so plan it as a separate trip or an overnight stay. For a lake-and-dam day out from Accra instead, see our Akosombo day trip guide.

Daylight driving

For longer trips outside major cities, the UK FCDO's Ghana safety advice says to travel during daylight hours. It advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, when street lighting is poor or non-existent, serious accidents are more likely and there's a higher risk of attacks on vehicles.

The Aburi road is short but steep and winding. Plan to be back down in Accra before sunset.

Car rental & hire for an Aburi day trip

Most visitors book in Accra. Compare car hire & rental with a driver in Accra. A driver who knows the hill can also wait while you walk round the gardens and the craft village.

Self-drive or a driver?

The climb from Ayi Mensah is steep and winding. Our self-drive or chauffeur guide sets out the trade-offs. If you drive yourself, check whether the car may leave Greater Accra and what the mileage limit is.

Agree the terms in writing

Before you go, agree these in writing (a WhatsApp message or email from the firm is fine):

Agree in writing Why it matters
Pickup time and address So you beat the Accra traffic
Road up and down N4 or Kitase, and what if one is blocked
Hours included The gardens and stops can take all day
Waiting time and overtime So a long lunch doesn't become a dispute
Fuel and parking So you know what's in the price
Latest return time So you're back before dark

We don't publish prices, because they change often in Ghana. Ask each firm for a dated written quote, and never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name.
