Boti Falls Day Trip from Accra by Car: Route, Timings and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: Boti Falls is at Huhunya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, about 17 km north-east of Koforidua. From Accra, drive to Koforidua and take the N3 north-east to Huhunya, or come in on the N3 from the Kpong side. No official Accra–Boti Falls road distance is published. Graphic Online has called it a 90-minute drive from Accra, but the last stretch from the Huhunya junction was reported to be in very poor condition in March 2026. Go in daylight and agree your driver's waiting time in writing.
This guide is for a Boti Falls day trip from Accra by car: where the falls are, which roads to take, what official sources say about distance and time, when the water flows best, and how to book car hire & rental with a driver.
Where is Boti Falls?
The Ghana Tourism Authority's Eastern Region page describes Boti as a seasonal waterfall at Huhunya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, about 30 metres high. The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, whose administrative capital is Somanya, lists Boti Falls, Umbrella Rock and the Three-Headed Palm Tree among the municipality's attractions.
| Question | What official and news sources say |
|---|---|
| District and region | Yilo Krobo Municipality, Eastern Region (GTA, GNA) |
| Nearest big town | Koforidua; the falls are about 17 km north-east of it (GTA, GNA) |
| Accra to Boti Falls by road | No official distance published |

| Drive time from Koforidua | Graphic Online (2023) said 30 minutes |
| Height | About 30 m (GTA); 30.5 m (GNA, 2026) |

The 17 km figure from the GTA and GNA is a "north-east of Koforidua" description, not a road distance from Accra.
How to get to Boti Falls from Accra
The Ghana Highway Authority's Eastern Region trunk road map (2020) shows the N3 running from Koforidua through Kurakan, Huhunya and Sikaben to Oterpolu, then east to Kpong. The GHA road network table lists the N3 from Kpong to Koforidua as 40 km. Huhunya is on that road, so you can reach it from either end.
1. Via Koforidua (west end of the N3)
- Drive from Accra to Koforidua on the N4 over the Akuapem hills or the N6 via Nsawam and Suhum. Our Accra to Koforidua by car guide covers both roads and current roadworks.
- From Koforidua, take the N3 north-east through Kurakan to Huhunya.
- Turn off at the Huhunya junction for the falls.
2. Via Kpong (east end of the N3)
- Drive from Accra towards Tema, then north on the N2 to Kpong. The GHA lists the N2 as running from Tema to Bakwu.
- At Kpong, take the N3 west through Oterpolu and Sikaben to Huhunya.
- Turn off at the Huhunya junction for the falls.
Neither the GHA nor the GTA says which of these is shorter or quicker, so we don't say either. Ask your driver which is flowing better on the day.
Somanya–Dodowa roadworks. GNA reported on 8 September 2026 that work had started on the 34 km Somanya roundabout–Dodowa road. GNA's report gave no completion date. If your driver uses that road, expect works.
The last stretch: the Huhunya road to the falls (checked 27 October 2026)
In March 2026, a GNA feature from Huhunya described the road from the Huhunya junction to the falls as being in "deplorable" condition. GNA quoted a first-time visitor calling it "extremely horrible". The same report said:
- there were no signs guiding visitors to the site
- the area lacked streetlights, fuel stations and a garage
- a receptionist said there was no hotel or restaurant at the site, and staff numbers had fallen from about 100 to nine
In February 2024, GNA reported that drivers from Accra and Koforidua were declining to use the road when hired by tourists. It said a 2021 pledge by the then Tourism Minister to improve the Boti Falls road had not been delivered. We found no GHA, Graphic or GNA report of the road being repaired as of 27 October 2026.
What this means for you:
- Fill up before you leave the main road. Koforidua is the obvious place.
- Bring food and water. Graphic Online reported a restaurant and a mini hotel at the site in 2023, but GNA's 2026 report says there's no hotel or restaurant. Don't rely on either.
- Pick a car with decent ground clearance, and tell the firm about the road when you book.
How long does the day trip take?
We found no official journey time from Accra to Boti Falls from the GHA, the Ghana Tourism Authority, Graphic or GNA. Graphic Online described the falls in January 2023 as a 30-minute drive from Koforidua and a 90-minute drive from Accra. That's a reporter's description, not a timed or official figure. It also predates the 2026 GNA report on the access road.
Allow for traffic leaving Accra, the slow last stretch and time at the site. The GTA and GNA both describe 250 steps down to the falls. Graphic Online's 2023 article said "over 70 steps", so the figures differ. Either way, climbing back up takes time and effort.
A simple plan:
| Part of the day | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Early start | Leave Accra early to beat traffic |
| Koforidua (or a main town on the Kpong side) | Fuel and food before the rural roads |
| Huhunya junction to the falls | Slow, rough road (GNA, 2026) |
| At the falls | Steps down and back up, Umbrella Rock, Three-Headed Palm Tree |
| Return | Leave in time to reach Accra or a main town before dark |
Best time to visit: when do the falls flow?
The GTA says Boti is a seasonal waterfall at its peak between June and August. The National Commission on Culture also says it flows best from June to August.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency's Climate Atlas Report 2026 says that south of 8°N, where Boti is, the major rainy season is typically March to July and the minor rainy season September to November. We found no official source on how much water is flowing at Boti on a given day, so ask the site or your driver before you go.
Rain also affects the roads. The same rains that feed the falls can make a rough access road worse. Read our rainy-season driving guide before a trip between March and November.
Water safety at the falls
The GTA describes visitors being surrounded by falling water at full flow, and GNA mentions a canoe ride. We found no published safety rules for swimming at Boti Falls from the GTA or the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly. The UK FCDO's swimming warning covers rip tides on Ghana's southern coast beaches. It doesn't give specific advice for waterfalls or inland pools.
In 2023, Graphic Online reported that the Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive cautioned visitors to be mindful of what they did at the site to prevent accidents. Keep children close on the steps and wet rocks, ask staff where it's safe before you go into the water, and don't go in if you're not a confident swimmer.
Daylight driving
The UK FCDO's Ghana safety advice says roads can be in poor condition, particularly in rural areas, and street lighting is poor or non-existent. It advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark and, for longer trips outside major cities, travelling in daylight.
The road to Boti is rural, and GNA reported no streetlights in the area. Plan to be back on the main road well before dark.
Car rental & hire for a Boti Falls day trip
Most visitors book in Accra. Compare car hire & rental with a driver in Accra. If you're staying in the Eastern Region, look at firms offering car hire & rental in Koforidua or browse the Eastern Region. A driver who knows the Huhunya road will save you guessing at junctions without signs.
Agree the terms in writing
Before you leave, agree these in writing (a WhatsApp message or email from the firm is fine):
| Agree in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pickup time and address | So you leave Accra early |
| Route there and back | Via Koforidua or Kpong, and what happens if a road is bad |
| The Huhunya access road | Some drivers have refused it (GNA, 2024) |
| Hours included and the overtime charge | Time at the falls and on the steps adds up |
| Driver's waiting time at the falls | So you're not rushed or charged extra |
| Fuel, tolls and parking | So you know what's in the price |
| Latest return time | So you're back before dark |
Never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name. We don't publish prices here, because Ghana prices change often. Ask each firm for a dated written quote, and check entry fees with the site.
