Akosombo Day Trip from Accra by Car: Dam, Adomi Bridge and Car Rental & Hire

9 min read · Last checked: 29 October 2026

Quick answer: For an Akosombo day trip from Accra, drive to Tema and take the N2 north through Kpong and Senchi to Atimpoku. There, the N2 turns east over the Adomi Bridge, but Akosombo is straight on, north of Atimpoku, so you don't need to cross the river to reach the dam. No official Accra–Akosombo road distance is published, and the Ghana Tourism Authority calls it about 2 hours' drive from Accra. You can't just turn up for a tour inside the dam: the Volta River Authority asks for a written request at least 10 working days ahead. Go in daylight and agree your driver's waiting time in writing.

This guide is for a one-day car trip from Accra to Akosombo: the road, the dam visit rules, the Adomi Bridge, the Lake Volta cruise and how to book car hire & rental with a driver. If you're carrying on to Ho, Hohoe or Wli, our Accra to the Volta Region guide and Accra to Ho by car guide cover those roads. We don't repeat them here.

Where is Akosombo?

Akosombo is a town in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, on the Volta River where the Akosombo Dam holds back Lake Volta. The Asuogyaman District Assembly's 2026 budget, published by the Ministry of Finance, describes the dam and lake as long-standing tourist attractions. It says visits are highest in July and August. The assembly's meeting hall is at Atimpoku, just south of Akosombo on the Ghana Highway Authority's map.

The Ghana Tourism Authority's Eastern Region page says the dam sits in the Akosombo gorge. It's 132 metres high from its foundation and 660 metres long. Lake Volta, which the dam created, covers about 8,502 square kilometres, and the GTA calls it the largest man-made lake in the world.

The route from Accra to Akosombo

The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table lists the N2 as running from Tema to Bakwu. Its 2020 Eastern Region trunk road map shows the N2 going north through Kpong and Senchi to Atimpoku. At Atimpoku the N2 turns east over the Adomi Bridge towards the Volta Region. A regional road, the R021, carries on north from Atimpoku to Akosombo.

  1. Leave Accra for Tema, then join the N2 north towards Kpong. The GTA describes the way to Akosombo as via Tema and the Shai Hills.
  2. Stay on the N2 through Kpong and Senchi to Atimpoku.
  3. At Atimpoku, don't cross the bridge if you're only going to the dam. Carry on north to Akosombo.

How far is it? We found no official road distance from Accra to Akosombo from the GHA or the Ministry of Roads and Highways. An older Volta River Authority brochure places Akosombo about 100 km north-east of Accra, but that describes where the town is, not a measured road distance. The GTA's Dodi World page calls it about 2 hours' drive from Accra. Traffic leaving Accra and Tema can change that a lot, so leave early.

Roadworks between Ashaiman and Akosombo Junction

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is turning the 64 km Ashaiman Roundabout–Akosombo Junction road into a dual carriageway, with a flyover at Ashaiman and an interchange at Asutsuare Junction. According to GNA's July 2024 report:

  • work began in May 2022 and was due to finish in November 2024
  • it stalled in July 2023 during the government's debt exchange programme
  • it resumed in July 2024

In March 2025, Citi Newsroom reported the Roads Minister was frustrated at slow progress around Ashaiman, where buildings were blocking the road's path, while work near Shai Hills was moving well. We found no 2026 official progress figure or completion date for this project. Allow extra time for roadworks on the way out of Tema.

Market days. The district budget says Akosombo and Atimpoku both hold markets on Mondays and Thursdays. Expect busier roads in both towns on those days.

Visiting the Akosombo Dam: book ahead

You can't walk into the dam site. In August 2025, the Ghanaian Times reported that the Volta River Authority (VRA) had resumed public visits to its power stations under a new visit policy:

  • send a formal letter to the VRA Chief Executive
  • send it at least 10 working days before the date you want to visit
  • once approved, VRA tells you the ID needed for security checks, the visit rules and the fees by age or category

Conflicting information. On 29 October 2026, the VRA's own "Tour / Visit our Plants" page still showed its March 2020 notice suspending visits to all its power plants, including the Akosombo dam site. We found no newer notice on the VRA site. Before you plan your day around the dam, contact VRA and get written confirmation that your visit is approved.

Fire in April 2026. Graphic Online reported that a fire on 23 April 2026 destroyed the main control room of the switchyard at the Akosombo generating complex. The Energy Ministry said the control room would have to be rebuilt, which could take several months. We found no report of what this means for visitors, which is another reason to check with VRA first.

Photos. The UK FCDO says photographing near sensitive sites is illegal, and you should ask permission before photographing a building where guards are on duty. Ask VRA staff where you can take pictures.

The Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku

The Adomi Bridge carries the N2 over the Volta River at Atimpoku, south of Akosombo. Graphic Online reported in December 2015 that it had reopened after 22 months of rehabilitation. Graphic described it as a 339.9-metre steel arch bridge linking Atimpoku in the Eastern Region with Juapong in the Volta Region. It was first opened in January 1957.

You don't need to cross it to reach Akosombo. If you do cross, for example towards Akwamufie or Ho, note the Big Push works on the far side:

  • In July 2025, the Ministry of Roads and Highways listed the Atimpoku–Asikuma Junction road, the Adomi Bridge–Akwamufie road and the Akosombo–Gyakiti–Kudikope road among Big Push road projects.
  • In July 2026, GBC reported the 17.5 km Atimpoku–Asikuma Junction rehabilitation was 32.3% complete and due in December 2027.

Lake Volta cruise to Dodi Island

The GTA recommends a weekend trip to Dodi Island on Lake Volta. Its Dodi World page says the MV Dodi Princess II sails from Akosombo to the island, 14.6 nautical miles away.

On 29 October 2026, Dodi World's own booking page listed Saturday regular cruises leaving at 9:00am and returning at 5:00pm. The GTA page, dated April 2025, gave a different weekend timetable, so go by the operator's own booking page and confirm before you travel. We don't quote cruise prices here. Check them with Dodi World when you book.

A 5pm return leaves little daylight for the drive back to Accra. If you take the cruise, think about staying overnight near Akosombo. The district budget says there are more than 30 hotels and resorts in the district.

Plan the day

Part of the day What to plan for
Early start Leave Accra early to get through Tema and the roadworks
Kpong, Senchi and Atimpoku Fuel and a break before Akosombo
Akosombo Dam visit only if VRA has approved it in writing
Atimpoku View the Adomi Bridge; cross only if you're going further
Lake Dodi cruise takes most of the day (9:00am to 5:00pm)
Return Leave in time to reach Accra before dark, or stay overnight

Daylight driving. The UK FCDO advises travelling in daylight on longer trips outside major cities and avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark. Street lighting is poor or non-existent in many places.

Dam spillage. VRA has released excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams in some years. Its press releases list spillage notices in 2022 and 2023, and we found no 2026 Akosombo spillage notice as of 29 October 2026. In the rainy season, check VRA's website and local news before you go, and read our rainy-season driving guide.

Car rental & hire for an Akosombo day trip

Most visitors book in Accra. Compare car hire & rental with a driver in Accra, or browse firms across the Eastern Region. A driver saves you from navigating Tema traffic and the roadworks, and can wait while you're at the dam or on the lake.

Agree the terms in writing

Agree in writing Why it matters
Pickup time and address So you leave Accra early
Stops (dam, Adomi Bridge, Dodi cruise) So the driver plans the day with you
Hours included and the overtime charge A full-day cruise means long waiting time
Where the driver waits and eats So you're not charged extra later
Fuel, tolls and parking So you know what's in the price
Overnight terms if you stay Who pays for the driver's room and meals
Latest return time So you're back before dark

We don't publish prices, because they change often in Ghana. Ask each firm for a dated written quote, and never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name.
