Accra to Sunyani by Road or Air: Hours, Distance and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: To go from Accra to Sunyani by road, take the N6 to Kumasi, then stay on the N6 north-west through Bechem to Sunyani. The Ghana Highway Authority lists Accra–Kumasi as 250 km, and Graphic has described the Kumasi–Sunyani road as 120 km, but no official Accra–Sunyani distance or journey time is published. By air, PassionAir lists Sunyani among its destinations. Africa World Airlines doesn't list Sunyani. If you drive, plan to arrive in daylight.
Sunyani is the capital of the Bono Region. The Sunyani Municipal Assembly's 2026 budget, published by the Ministry of Finance, says the municipality is home to the regional capital. This guide covers the trip from Accra to Sunyani by road or air: the route, what official sources say about distance and hours, roadworks, flights to Sunyani Airport, and how to book car hire & rental with or without a driver.
The first half of the drive is the Accra–Kumasi road. We cover that leg in our Accra to Kumasi road trip guide, so we don't repeat it here.
How far is Sunyani from Accra?
| Question | What we found (checked 28 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Accra to Sunyani by road | No official road distance published |
| N6, Accra–Kumasi | 250 km (Ghana Highway Authority) |
| Kumasi–Sunyani road | "The 120km-road" (Graphic, August 2013) |
| Journey time | No official figure published |
The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table lists the N6 from Accra to Kumasi at 250 km. It doesn't give a figure for Accra to Sunyani.
A 2013 Graphic feature on the Kumasi–Sunyani road called it "the 120km-road". That's a newspaper figure, not a measured GHA distance, and it doesn't say exactly where in Kumasi and Sunyani it starts and ends.
Adding the two gives about 370 km. That's our sum of two separate figures, not an official distance. Route planners and travel blogs give their own figures, but they aren't official sources, so we don't repeat them.
How many hours from Accra to Sunyani?
We found no official journey time from the Ghana Highway Authority or the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and no newspaper figure for the whole trip.
Your time will depend on traffic leaving Accra, traffic through Kumasi, roadworks (see below) and stops. It's a long day, so leave Accra early, or break the trip with a night in Kumasi.
The route: N6 to Kumasi, then on to Sunyani
The Ghana Highway Authority's 2020 trunk road maps for the Ashanti and Bono regions (linked in the Sources list below) show the main route:
- Leave Accra on the N6 and drive to Kumasi. Our Accra to Kumasi guide covers this leg stage by stage.
- From Kumasi, the N6 carries on north-west through Abuakwa and Mankranso to Abesewa, the last town on the Ashanti map.
- It then crosses the Ahafo Region. Graphic's 2013 feature lists towns on the road including Bechem, Duayaw Nkwanta and Yamfo Junction.
- The N6 enters Sunyani from Abesim, then continues north-west to Berekum.
The Sunyani Municipal Assembly's budget names Fell Street, the Sunyani–Bechem Road, as one of its trunk roads.
Roadworks on the Kumasi–Sunyani road (checked 28 October 2026)
- Abuakwa to Mankranso. MyJoyOnline reported in January 2026 that the Ashanti Regional Minister said work on Phase 2 of the Kumasi–Sunyani road, from Abuakwa to Mankranso, would start the following week. He said the stretch from Mukpa to Mankranso had "a lot of damaged areas". We found no later report from GHA, Graphic or GNA on progress.
- Sunyani–Abesim road. Graphic reported in February 2026 that the government had approved dualisation of the Sunyani–Abesim road. The Municipal Chief Executive said all vehicles from the Accra–Kumasi direction use this road, and it was heavily congested between 6:30 am and 9:30 am. In July 2026, Graphic reported that the start had been delayed while Ghana Water pipes were moved, and that the contractor would mobilise the following month. We found no official confirmation that main works had started by 28 October 2026.
- Sunyani Outer Ring Road. GNA reported in February 2026 that a 34 km dual carriageway around Sunyani, with the sod cut on 21 December 2025, was expected to take two years. It links communities including Fiapre and Old Abesim to the Sunyani–Berekum and Sunyani–Abesim highways.
For roadworks between Accra and Kumasi, see our Accra to Kumasi guide.
Is there a flight from Accra to Sunyani?
PassionAir lists Sunyani among its destinations. Here is what we could verify on 28 October 2026:
- PassionAir. Its website and FAQ say it "currently operates flights to Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale, Wa, and Sunyani". Its booking site blocked our automated check, so we couldn't confirm the current timetable.
- Africa World Airlines. Its website lists Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale in Ghana, but not Sunyani.
- The airport. Ghana Airports Company says Sunyani Airport closed in March 2016 because its runway, taxi link and apron had deteriorated. The runway was rebuilt and extended from 1,280 m to 1,400 m, and the airport was commissioned on 3 August 2022. GACL's projects page says PassionAir "has since commenced a 6 times weekly flight", but it doesn't say when that was written.
- Plans. In March 2026, the President said the runway, about 1.5 km, was too short for planes that land in Kumasi, and that a new 2.4 km runway was planned, Citi Newsroom reported. GNA reported that he inspected the proposed site for a Bono Regional Airport at Nsuatre, near Sunyani. No construction start date was given.
Check with PassionAir before you plan around a flight. If it doesn't suit, Africa World Airlines lists up to 8 flights a day to Kumasi on its website, and you could hire a car with a driver from Kumasi for the last stretch to Sunyani.
Daylight driving
For longer trips outside major cities, the UK FCDO's Ghana safety advice says to travel during daylight hours. It also advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, when street lighting is poor or non-existent and the risk of serious accidents is much greater.
For the drive to Sunyani:
- Leave Accra early.
- Allow extra time for traffic in Kumasi and roadworks beyond it.
- If you're running late, stop for the night in Kumasi rather than drive on after dark.
Car rental & hire for Accra to Sunyani
You have three main options:
- Book in Accra and keep the same car and driver for the whole trip. Compare firms offering car hire & rental with a driver in Accra.
- Fly or drive to Kumasi and book locally. Compare car hire & rental in Kumasi.
- Book in Sunyani if you fly in. See the firms that list car hire & rental in Sunyani, and ask whether they'll meet you at the airport.
Self-drive or a driver?
It's a long drive through two big cities' traffic, and a local driver will know the road conditions on the day. Our self-drive or chauffeur guide sets out the trade-offs. If you drive yourself, check the firm's mileage limits and whether the car may go to the Bono Region.
Agree the terms in writing
Before you leave, agree these in writing (a WhatsApp message or email from the firm is fine):
| Agree in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pickup time and address | So you arrive in daylight |
| Whether you'll stop overnight in Kumasi | So the driver's overnight costs are agreed |
| Hours included and the overtime charge | So traffic and roadwork delays don't become a dispute |
| Fuel, tolls and parking | So you know what's in the price |
| Driver's meals and overnight stay in Sunyani | If you don't drive back the same day |
| Local trips around Sunyani and the return date | So the firm knows how long you need the car |
Never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name. There's no site-wide price list here, because Ghana prices change often. Ask each firm for a dated written quote.
