Takoradi to Elubo (Côte d'Ivoire Border) by Road: Route and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: To drive from Takoradi to Elubo, Ghana's main road border with Côte d'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast), you stay on the N1 the whole way. It runs west through Agona, Esiama, past Aiyinase and through Mpataba, and ends at Elubo. Nobody official publishes a Takoradi–Elubo distance or drive time. Plan to arrive in daylight, have your passport ready, and if you rent or hire a car, get the firm's written permission before you take it across the border.
This guide covers the road from Takoradi to the Ghana–Côte d'Ivoire border at Elubo: the towns the official map shows, roadworks in 2026, the border post, entry rules for Côte d'Ivoire and car hire & rental for the trip. If you're starting in Accra, our Accra to Takoradi guide covers the first part of the drive. For Ghana's other main land border, see Accra to Aflao.

The route: the N1 west to Elubo
The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table lists the N1 as Elubo–Tema, 540 km. So Elubo is where Ghana's coastal highway starts, at its western end. The same table lists the N12 as Elubo–Hamile, 670 km, which heads north from Elubo towards the Upper West.
The GHA's 2020 Western Region trunk road map shows the N1 running from Sekondi-Takoradi through these places, in order:
- Kwesimintsim, Apowa, Ewusiejo and Aboadi to Agona (Agona Nkwanta is beside it)
- Apimanim, Abora, Anaji, Dadwen and Isakro
- Esiama and Azulewanu, close to the coast
- Alabokazo, Edwakpele and Menzezor, beside Aiyinase
- Nvelenu and Mpataba, then Mile Five, Sowodademu and Anwiafutu Junction
- Elubo
Near Mpataba, the map shows regional road R-019 leaving the N1 and running near the coast through Tikobo No.1 to Half Assini, the Jomoro capital. It doesn't mark Axim or the turning for Nzulezo, the stilt village, so we don't describe those turn-offs here. Ask your driver if you want to stop at them.
How far is Elubo from Takoradi, and how long does it take?
There's no official Takoradi–Elubo distance. The GHA table only gives whole trunk roads, such as the 540 km N1, and nothing between Takoradi and Elubo. The only section figure we found is the 23 km Takoradi–Agona Nkwanta stretch being dualled (MyJoyOnline, September 2026). We found no figure for Agona to Elubo, so we don't add one up. We don't use route-planner or blog figures.
There's no official drive time either. Things that will affect it:
- Dualisation works near Takoradi. MyJoyOnline reported on 16 September 2026 that the contractor expected to hand over the 23 km Takoradi–Agona Nkwanta dual carriageway by the end of November 2026, with guardrails and road markings still to do. We found no official notice of the handover as of 1 November 2026.
- Planned works from Agona to Elubo. The Ghana News Agency reported in April 2026 that people affected by the Elubo–Agona Nkwanta stretch of the Abidjan–Lagos Corridor Road were still asking for compensation, and were told they'd be paid before construction starts. We found no report that construction had started by 1 November 2026.
- Road condition. The Jomoro Municipal Assembly's 2026 budget describes its road network as "fairly good", but also lists "poor roads network" among its key challenges.
- Checkpoints. The Ghana Immigration Service lists an inland checkpoint at Sameye as part of its Elubo command. Keep your passport or ID to hand.
- Market day. The Jomoro budget gives Elubo's market day as Wednesday, and says traders from Côte d'Ivoire come with goods on market days. Expect busier roads in town.
The UK FCDO advises against road travel outside Ghana's main towns after dark. Leave Takoradi early so you reach Elubo well before sunset, especially if you're crossing the same day.
The Elubo border post
The Ghana Immigration Service lists its Elubo Sector Command at the Elubo/Ivory Coast border in the Jomoro area, alongside the Sameye inland checkpoint. The GIS lists other Jomoro posts, such as the wharves near Half Assini, but Elubo is the one on the N1.
A few things in the news in 2026:
- In June 2026, MyJoyOnline quoted the Deputy Health Minister describing Elubo as Ghana's second-largest border post. Because of the Ebola outbreak elsewhere in Africa, the Jomoro health director said every bus and traveller coming through the border was being screened, including temperature checks.
- In October 2026, MyJoyOnline reported that the Narcotics Control Commission met Ivorian border officials at the Elubo–Noé border. Noé is the town on the Ivorian side.
Use the official crossing only, and expect health and security checks on both sides.
Entering Côte d'Ivoire: what the advice says
What you need depends on your passport:
- ECOWAS citizens. The GIS lists Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) among the ECOWAS states whose citizens don't need a visa for Ghana. Check Côte d'Ivoire's rules for your own nationality too.
- British passport holders. The UK FCDO says you must have a visa. You apply and pay for an e-visa online at least 10 working days before you travel. The FCDO says that once it's approved you can collect the visa on arrival at Abidjan airport. It doesn't explain how this works at a land border, so check with the Embassy of Côte d'Ivoire before you rely on it at Elubo.
- Passport and health. The FCDO says your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival and that you need a yellow fever certificate. Travellers from Ebola-affected countries should expect health screening.
- Cash. The FCDO says you can take up to 500,000 West African CFA francs in cash into Côte d'Ivoire and must declare foreign currency.
- Coming back to Ghana. Make sure your Ghana visa lets you re-enter. The GIS issues re-entry visas.
The FCDO advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of Côte d'Ivoire's border with Liberia, and against all travel to areas near the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali. Elubo is not in those areas, but check the latest advice before you go further.
Can you take a rental or hire car into Côte d'Ivoire?
Only if the firm agrees. Don't assume a car can leave Ghana. Before you book:
- Ask the firm directly whether the car may cross into Côte d'Ivoire, and get the permission in writing.
- Ask about insurance. Graphic has explained that the ECOWAS Brown Card extends a vehicle's third-party insurance to other ECOWAS countries and is issued through the vehicle's insurer. Ask whether the car has one.
- Carry the documents. The FCDO says to carry your licence and international driving permit, the car's registration documents and the insurance card in case police stop you in Côte d'Ivoire.
- Check the driving permit. The FCDO says Ghana accepts the 1949 international driving permit, but Côte d'Ivoire requires the 1968 version (or a local licence). Read our international driving permit guide before you go.
- Ask who pays border costs, and get it in the written quote.
If the firm won't allow cross-border use, another option is to be driven to Elubo, cross at the official post, and arrange onward transport on the Ivorian side.
Driving on the Ivorian side
The FCDO's safety advice for Côte d'Ivoire says:
- there have been armed robberies of private cars on the main roads in the west of the country, by day as well as at night, so keep doors locked, windows shut and valuables out of sight
- driving standards are poor, and driving outside Abidjan is difficult, especially at night
- there are roadblocks and checkpoints across the country; slow down, stay calm and show your papers when asked
- beware of unofficial roadblocks, mostly on quiet or secondary roads
- the rainy season runs from May to November, and minor roads may become impassable
Car rental & hire for the Elubo trip
There are no car hire firms based in Elubo on GhanaCarHire yet, so most people arrange the car in Takoradi. If you have time on the way, the beaches and forts in our Busua, Butre and Dixcove guide are just off the same stretch of the N1.
Agree the terms in writing
| Agree in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Drop at Elubo or cross the border | Cross-border use needs the firm's permission |
| Brown Card and documents | Needed if the car enters Côte d'Ivoire |
| Waiting time at the border | Crossings and checks can take a while |
| Return time | So the driver is back before dark |
| Overnight terms | Driver's room and meals if you stay |
| Fuel, tolls and border costs | So you know what's in the price |
We don't publish prices, because they change often in Ghana. Ask each firm for a dated written quote, and never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Elubo from Takoradi?
There's no official figure. The Ghana Highway Authority gives the whole N1 as 540 km from Elubo to Tema but publishes nothing between Takoradi and Elubo. MyJoyOnline gives the Takoradi–Agona Nkwanta section as 23 km; we found no figure for the rest.
What road goes from Takoradi to Elubo?
The N1. The GHA's Western Region map shows it running west from Takoradi through Agona, Esiama, past Aiyinase and through Mpataba to Elubo, where it ends at the Côte d'Ivoire border.
Is the Elubo border the main crossing into Côte d'Ivoire?
It's the crossing on the N1. The Ghana Immigration Service has its Elubo Sector Command at the border, and a Deputy Health Minister described Elubo in June 2026 as Ghana's second-largest border post. The town on the Ivorian side is Noé.
Do I need a visa for Côte d'Ivoire?
ECOWAS citizens don't need a visa for Ghana; check Côte d'Ivoire's rules for your nationality. The UK FCDO says British passport holders must have a visa, applied for online at least 10 working days ahead, and need a yellow fever certificate.
Can I take a hire car from Ghana into Côte d'Ivoire?
Only with the firm's written permission. Ask about the ECOWAS Brown Card insurance and carry the car's registration and insurance papers. The FCDO says Côte d'Ivoire requires the 1968 international driving permit.
Is the Takoradi–Agona road finished?
Not as of 1 November 2026, as far as we could find. The contractor told MyJoyOnline in September 2026 that it expected to hand over the 23 km dual carriageway by the end of November 2026.
