Kumasi to Takoradi by Road: Route, Time and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: There's no single official road from Kumasi to Takoradi. The Ghana Highway Authority's maps show three ways: the coast route down the N8 to Yamoransa and west on the N1 through Cape Coast; an inland route through Dunkwa-on-Offin and Daboase to the N1 at Daboase Junction; and a mining-belt route through Bogoso and Tarkwa that reaches the N1 near Agona, west of Takoradi. The Ghana Highway Authority publishes no Kumasi–Takoradi distance and nobody official publishes a journey time. Parts of every route had problems in 2026, so check the road with your driver or hire firm the day before and drive in daylight.
This guide is about getting from Kumasi to Takoradi by road: which roads the official maps show, what's happening on each of them in 2026, and car hire & rental between the two cities. If you're going via Cape Coast, our Kumasi to Cape Coast guide and Cape Coast to Takoradi guide cover those two legs in detail, so we don't repeat them here.

How far is Kumasi from Takoradi?
There's no official Kumasi–Takoradi distance. The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table only gives whole trunk roads. It lists the N8 from Yamoransa to Kumasi as 170 km, which covers most of the coast route, but not the N1 stretch from Yamoransa through Cape Coast to Takoradi. It has no figure for either inland route, and we don't use route-planner estimates.
How long does it take? We found no official journey time from the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Roads and Highways or a recent newspaper report for the whole trip. Allow most of a day and add time for roadworks, trucks and checkpoints.
The three routes on the official maps
The GHA's 2020 trunk road maps for the Ashanti, Central and Western regions (linked in the Sources list) show these roads. Place names are spelled as on the maps; news reports sometimes differ, for example Ayanfuri for the maps' Ayamfori.
1. The coast route via Cape Coast
Take the N8 from Kumasi through Fomena, Assin Praso and Assin Fosu to Yamoransa, then turn west on the N1 through Cape Coast to Takoradi. It's the route most likely to have roadworks in 2026, as the southern end of the N8 hasn't been rebuilt and the Cape Coast–Takoradi N1 is being turned into a dual carriageway. Our two leg guides have the town-by-town route and the latest road reports.
2. The inland route via Dunkwa-on-Offin and Daboase
The GHA maps mark this whole road as the N10, although the GHA's road table lists the N10 only as Kumasi to Paga in the north. From Kumasi:
- Leave south via Santasi, Kotwe, Trede, Pekyi No. 1 and Agyamasu to Anwiankwanta. This is the same start as the coast route.
- Where the N8 branches off at Anwiankwanta, stay on the N10 south through Atobiase, Asikasu, Odumase and Kwapea to Dunkwa Junction, where the road to Obuasi turns off.
- Continue through Nhiaso, Tweapease, Fenaso Nkwanta and Adamso, then cross into the Central Region at Dunkwa (Dunkwa-on-Offin).
- Head south through Aboabo and Moseaso to Nyenase, near Twifo Praso.
- Enter the Western Region at Atieku, then pass Adaase, Senchiem, Mamponso, Anyinabrim, Essaman, Akasakasa, Sekyere Krobo, Kofi Ashia, Aboaboso and Daboase.
- At Daboase Junction, join the N1 and turn west through Shama Junction, Inchaban and Kojokrom into Takoradi.
3. The mining-belt route via Bogoso and Tarkwa
This route shares the first part of the inland route as far as Dunkwa-on-Offin. From there:
- Turn west on the inter-regional road through Amisakrom to Ayamfori (Ayanfuri).
- Take the inter-regional road south-west into the Western Region (marked IR6 on the Western map), through Nkonya, Dadieso, Wassa Akropong, Bawdie and Bogoso.
- Continue south to Tarkwa, then through Bonsa, Simpa, Nsuem and Kyekyewere to the N1 near Agona.
- Turn east on the N1 through Aboadi, Ewusiejo, Apowa and Kwesimintsim into Takoradi.
Road conditions on each route (checked 31 October 2026)
The Takoradi end: Agona Junction road nearly finished
The last stretch of the mining-belt route, Takoradi to Agona Junction, is being made into a dual carriageway. The Ministry of Roads and Highways lists it as a 23 km Big Push project, still "Ongoing". In May 2026, Graphic Online reported it was 85% complete (Graphic called it 25 km), with bridges at Apremdo and Ewusiejoe. In September, the contractor told Citi Newsroom it expected to hand the road over by the end of November 2026, ahead of the original completion date of 19 March 2027. Until then, expect guardrail and road-marking work.
Tarkwa: truck damage and a mudslide
The Ghana News Agency reported in February 2026 that the 67 km Agona Nkwanta–Tarkwa road, commissioned in 2024, was already breaking up. The contractor blamed heavy trucks carrying manganese and bauxite, and the Deputy Roads Minister said a technical assessment found the road had carried more than three times its design load. The contractor announced six months of repairs and warned of heavy congestion while they were carried out. We found no official report saying the repairs have finished.
North of Tarkwa, Citi Newsroom reported on 15 June 2026 that a mudslide after a night of heavy rain buried part of the Akoon–Bogoso Junction road on the main Tarkwa highway, closing it to traffic until it was cleared with Gold Fields' machinery. This is mining country, so expect ore trucks and mine traffic around Tarkwa and Bogoso.
Dunkwa-on-Offin to Ayanfuri: still unpaved
The link between the two inland routes is the weakest point of the mining-belt route. In April 2026, Citi Newsroom reported that the road from Ayanfuri to Dunkwa-on-Offin was an unpaved stretch throwing up so much dust that health officials linked it to eye and respiratory infections. In September 2026, the Ghana News Agency reported the Finance Minister as saying construction of the Dunkwa–Ayanfuri road would start in 2027. Expect dust, and check the road after heavy rain.
Dunkwa-on-Offin to Twifo and Daboase
In September 2025, GNA reported that residents along the road from Twifo Praso to Dunkwa-on-Offin called it a "death trap", and the District Chief Executive said it had been awarded on contract and work would start soon. We couldn't confirm from official sources whether that is the exact road the GHA maps mark as the N10. Further south, the Ministry of Roads and Highways' 2025–2026 project list includes an upgrading contract, awarded on 8 January 2026, that covers the Daboase Junction–Atieku road (km 59–66). We found no official progress report on either. Ask your driver about this route before choosing it.
The Kumasi end
Every route starts on the road south from Kumasi to Anwiankwanta, where a 30 km dual carriageway is being built. Our Kumasi to Cape Coast guide has the latest on that section and on the N8.
Which route should you take?
We can't tell you which route is quickest, because nobody official publishes times for them. What the 2026 reports do show:
- Coast route: trunk roads all the way, but expect roadworks south of Assin Fosu and between Cape Coast and Takoradi. Easiest if you want to stop in Cape Coast.
- Inland route via Daboase: avoids Cape Coast, but we found few recent official reports on its condition.
- Mining-belt route via Tarkwa: includes the unpaved Dunkwa–Ayanfuri section and heavy trucks, but a newly dualled road at the Takoradi end.
A local driver will know which road is in better shape that week. Ask before you set off, especially after heavy rain.
Can you fly from Kumasi to Takoradi?
We found no direct Kumasi–Takoradi flight listed on an airline website. Africa World Airlines' website lists Kumasi and Takoradi among its Ghana destinations, and PassionAir's lists both, but neither showed a route between them when we checked on 31 October 2026. For Takoradi Airport arrivals, see our Takoradi business car hire guide.
Safety on the drive
The UK FCDO says roads can be in poor condition, especially in rural areas, and that street lighting is poor or non-existent. It advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, when the risk of serious accidents and attacks on vehicles is higher. For longer trips outside major cities it advises:
- travelling in daylight
- travelling in a convoy of at least two vehicles
- getting advice from local police
- not stopping if people at the roadside try to flag you down
The FCDO also notes media reports of criminal kidnapping in Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi. Leave Kumasi early enough to reach Takoradi well before dark.

| One-way or return | The firm has to get the car back |
| Pickup time | So you arrive in daylight |
| Driver's hours and overtime | Roadworks or a closure can add hours |
| Overnight terms | Driver's room and meals if you stay |
| Fuel, tolls and parking | So you know what's in the price |
| Vehicle type | Unpaved and damaged sections on the inland roads |
We don't publish prices, because they change often in Ghana. Ask each firm for a dated written quote, and never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name.
