Kumasi to Cape Coast by Road: The N8 Route, Time and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: The road from Kumasi to Cape Coast is the N8. You leave Kumasi south to Anwiankwanta, then take the N8 through Fomena, Assin Praso and Assin Fosu to Yamoransa, where it meets the coastal N1 just east of Cape Coast. The Ghana Highway Authority lists the N8, Yamoransa to Kumasi, at 170 km, but publishes no door-to-door Kumasi–Cape Coast distance and no official journey time. The section from Asante Bekwai to Assin Fosu has been rebuilt; the 67 km from Assin Fosu to Yamoransa has not, and part of it washed away in May 2026. Drive it in daylight.
This guide covers just the Kumasi to Cape Coast leg: the towns on the way, the road's condition in 2026, timings and car hire & rental between the two cities. Many visitors do it as part of a loop with Accra. Our Accra to Cape Coast road trip guide covers the coast leg and the castles, so we don't repeat them here.

How far is Kumasi from Cape Coast?
There's no official door-to-door distance. The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table gives the N8 from Yamoransa to Kumasi as 170 km. Yamoransa is a junction on the N1 a short way east of Cape Coast, so you add that stretch at the Cape Coast end and your drive across Kumasi at the other.
Figures also differ between official sources. The GHA's own 2020 Ashanti map shows the N8 starting at Anwiankwanta, south of Kumasi, with the road into the city marked N10. When the Assin Praso–Assin Fosu section opened in 2023, GNA described the N8 as 176 km from Yamoransa to Anwiankwanta. Neither is a Kumasi-to-Cape-Coast figure, and we don't use route-planner estimates.
How long does it take? We found no official journey time from the GHA or the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and no recent newspaper figure for the whole trip. Allow most of a day, leave early, and add time for the unrebuilt southern section and for trucks.
The route, town by town
The GHA's 2020 trunk road maps for the Ashanti and Central regions (linked in the Sources list) show this route from Kumasi:
- Leave Kumasi south-west via Santasi on the road the map marks N10, through Kotwe, Trede, Pekyi No. 1, Agyamasu and Ofoase Kokoben to Anwiankwanta.
- At Anwiankwanta, take the N8 south-east (the N10 carries on south). Pass the Bekwai turn-off, then Bogyawe, Ankaase, Kyeaboso and Dompoase to Fomena.
- Continue past Kusa and Adansi Asokwa, where the map marks Obuasi Junction, then Kwabrafoso, Ayokoa, New Akrofuom, Fumso and New Edubiase.
- Carry on through Atobiase, Apagya and Atasi Nkwanta to Adansi Praso, the last town in the Ashanti Region.
- Enter the Central Region at Assin Praso, then pass Asempanaye, Dansame, Assin Breku, Assin Akonfudi, Brofoyedur, Assin Nyankomase and Juaso to Assin Fosu.
- South of Assin Fosu, pass Atonsu, Adubiase, Nsuta, Enyinabrim, Akrofuom and Assin Andoe to Assin Manso.
- Continue through Subinso, Fnati Nyankumase, Abora Dunkwa, Tayedo, Asebu and Kobena Ansa to Yamoransa, then turn west on the N1 into Cape Coast.
Place names are spelled as on the GHA maps; road signs and news reports sometimes differ, for example Assin Foso for Assin Fosu and Anyinabrim for Enyinabrim.
A stop at Assin Manso
The Ghana Tourism Authority's Visit Ghana site describes the Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Site as being 40 km along the Cape Coast–Kumasi highway from the Yamoransa junction. It says captives took their last bath at the river here on the way to the coast, and that Emancipation Day ceremonies are held there every 1 August. Many visitors stop here before Cape Coast Castle.
Road condition on the Kumasi–Cape Coast N8 (checked 31 October 2026)
The road falls into three parts.
Kumasi to Anwiankwanta. GBC reported on 27 August 2026 that work had resumed on the 30 km Ahenema Kokoben–Anwiankwanta road. The single carriageway is being turned into a dual carriageway linking up with the existing dual road that ends at Santasi Anyinam in Kumasi. The contractor had returned to site two months before, after the project stalled, and has until the end of 2027 to finish. Expect roadworks on this stretch.
Anwiankwanta to Assin Fosu. This half has been rebuilt. Graphic Online reported that Phase One, 60 km from Asante Bekwai to Assin Praso, was completed in December 2013. Phase Two, 31.2 km from Assin Praso to Assin Fosu, was commissioned in June 2023. GNA reported it was funded by a Japanese government grant and includes a 1.2 km dual carriageway through Assin Fosu.
Assin Fosu to Yamoransa. This is the section to watch. At the 2023 commissioning, Citi Newsroom reported that the government would seek funds for the remaining 67 km between Assin Fosu and Yamoransa. The Ministry of Roads and Highways' 2026 Big Push project lists, checked on 31 October 2026, include no N8 Cape Coast–Kumasi project.
On 26 May 2026, Citi Newsroom reported that heavy rains had washed away part of the Yamoransa–Assin Fosu highway at Assin Andoe, the second incident there in less than a week. Motorists were sent on a temporary diversion while engineers prepared provisional repairs, and the local alternative road via Adadientam and Homaho was also cut off by floodwater. We found no later official report saying the section had been permanently repaired, so ask your driver or hire firm about it before you set off, especially in the rainy season.
When the road is blocked
In November 2024, Graphic Online reported that a truck crash at the Assin Darmang Ngresi section blocked the highway for almost 24 hours while police cleared it. Drivers were advised to use the Assin Manso–Ajumako road, the Anyinabrim–Asikuma road, or the Assin Fosu–Twifo Praso road through to Cape Coast. Those are the detours a local driver is likely to know.
Safety on the drive
The National Road Safety Authority lists three blackspots on the N8 in the Central Region: Assin Fosu, Assin Asempanaye and the Railway Overhead. In August 2026, Graphic Online reported that two people died at Assin Fosu at about 7 pm when a car overtaking a turning vehicle hit an oncoming bus from Kumasi.
The UK FCDO says street lighting is poor or non-existent and advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, when the risk of serious accidents is much greater. For longer trips outside major cities it advises daylight travel.
For this trip, that means:
- Leave Kumasi in the morning so you reach Cape Coast well before dark.
- Take extra care through Assin Fosu and at Asempanaye.
- Overtake only where you can see well ahead, and never past a vehicle that's slowing to turn.
- After heavy rain, check the Assin Andoe section before you leave.

Agree the terms in writing
| Agree in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| One-way or return | The firm has to get the car back if you don't |
| Pickup time and address | So you arrive in daylight |
| Stops (Assin Manso, Kakum) | So waiting time is in the plan |
| Driver's hours and overtime | A blocked road can make the trip much longer |
| Overnight terms | Driver's room and meals if you stay in Cape Coast |
| Fuel, tolls and parking | So you know what's in the price |
| Vehicle type | Potholes and diversions south of Assin Fosu |
We don't publish prices, because they change often in Ghana. Ask each firm for a dated written quote, and never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kumasi from Cape Coast by road?
There's no official door-to-door figure. The Ghana Highway Authority lists the N8, Yamoransa to Kumasi, at 170 km. Yamoransa is a junction on the N1 just east of Cape Coast, so the full trip is a little longer depending on where you start and finish.
How long does it take to drive from Kumasi to Cape Coast?
We found no official journey time. The southern section between Assin Fosu and Yamoransa hasn't been rebuilt, and a crash or flooding can close the road for hours, so leave early and travel in daylight.
Which road goes from Kumasi to Cape Coast?
The N8. From Kumasi you go south to Anwiankwanta, then take the N8 through Fomena, Assin Praso, Assin Fosu and Assin Manso to Yamoransa, where you join the N1 west into Cape Coast.
Is the Kumasi–Cape Coast road in good condition?
The section from Asante Bekwai to Assin Fosu was rebuilt in 2013 and 2023. We found no rebuilding project for the 67 km from Assin Fosu to Yamoransa, and part of it at Assin Andoe washed away in May 2026. We found no N8 project in the 2026 Big Push lists and no later report of a permanent repair as of 31 October 2026.
Is it safe to drive from Kumasi to Cape Coast at night?
The UK FCDO advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, and says street lighting is poor or non-existent. The NRSA lists Assin Fosu as a blackspot on the N8, so plan to drive in daylight.
Can I hire a car one way from Kumasi to Cape Coast?
Some firms may allow it, but the firm has to get the car back. Ask about one-way terms in writing before you book, or hire a car with a driver who returns it.
