Ada Foah Day Trip from Accra by Car: Route, Timings and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: An Ada Foah day trip from Accra by car follows the motorway to Tema and the N1 Accra–Aflao road east, then turns south for the last stretch to the coast. The Ministry of Finance's budget document for the Ada East District says Ada Foah is about 20 km off the Accra–Aflao road. We couldn't find an official Accra–Ada Foah road distance or journey time from the Ghana Highway Authority, Graphic or GNA. The Ghana Tourism Authority calls it "about a one-and-a-half-hour drive" from Accra. And yes, Ada is in the Greater Accra Region.
Ada Foah is where the Volta River meets the sea, and it's one of the easiest beach and river escapes from the capital. This guide covers the route, how long to allow, beach safety, and how to book car rental & hire with a driver for the day. It's for anyone in Accra, whether you're a tourist, a business visitor with a free Sunday, a student, NGO staff or a local family.
Is Ada in Greater Accra?
Yes. The Ministry of Finance's 2025 budget estimates for the Ada East District Assembly say the district is in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region, with Ada-Foah as its capital. It says the Volta forms an estuary about 2 km from the town, and that the district borders South Tongu District in the Volta Region. It lists Big Ada, Kasseh and Ada-Foah among its major settlements.
The Ada East District Assembly says the area used to be the Dangme East District. Ada East was created in June 2012, when the separate Ada West District was formed.

Route planners and tourism blogs give a range of figures, but none of them is an official source, so we haven't repeated them here. Your driver's odometer and live traffic will tell you more than any single number.
The route: Accra to Ada Foah
- Leave Accra on the motorway to Tema.
- From the Tema end, join the N1 towards Aflao, past Dawhenya and the Prampram junction.
- At Kasseh, turn right (south) off the Accra–Aflao road for the last stretch to Ada Foah.
Roadworks near Tema. Graphic Online reported on 27 August 2026 that the Roads Minister was unhappy with slow progress on the 17 km Tema Roundabout–Dawhenya stretch of the N1, which was 23.11% complete. He said motorists get stuck because they use only the existing lane. The contractor said diversions, including a route through Prampram township, had improved traffic flow. Expect slow sections and diversions here in both directions.
The last stretch. The Ghana News Agency reported in May 2026 that Ada youth groups had protested about the poor state of several roads, including the Kasseh–Ada Foah road. They also said inadequate street lighting made night travel dangerous for residents. Allow extra time for this section, and don't plan to drive it after dark.
If you're heading further east to the Volta Region or the Togo border, our Accra to Aflao by car guide covers the rest of the N1.
How many hours from Accra to Ada?
No official journey time is published. The Ghana Tourism Authority's Visit Ghana page describes Ada as "just about a one-and-a-half-hour drive" from Accra. A 2022 Graphic Online travel column called it "just about an hour outside the capital". Neither is a timed figure. Traffic leaving Accra and around Tema, the Dawhenya roadworks and the Kasseh–Ada Foah road can all add time.
For a day trip, plan on a morning start and aim to be back in Accra before dark.
What to do in Ada Foah
The Ghana Tourism Authority lists:
- sailing around the island communities, and visiting what it calls the largest estuary in Ghana, where the river meets the sea;
- mangroves, crocodile islands and migratory bird sites;
- marine turtle sites;
- watersports, from speed boats and sailing to canoeing and kayaking;
- beaches at Ada Foah and Big Ada;
- the Ada Foah market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, for seafood;
- the Asafotufiam festival in the first week of August.
Check boat trip times, prices and life jackets with the operator on the day. We don't publish prices for boat trips or resorts.
Beach and water safety
The UK FCDO's Ghana safety advice says swimming is dangerous on the beaches along Ghana's southern coast because of rip tides and undertows, and that there are occasional reports of deaths of adults and children. It says theft is the main problem at beaches, with isolated incidents of violent crime, and advises you not to visit beaches alone.
At Ada, treat the ocean side as a place to walk, not swim. A 2022 Graphic column described the estuary as a spot where anyone who slipped would be "swallowed in seconds", and recommended watching it from a safe distance. If you take a boat, wear a life jacket.
Daylight driving
The FCDO advises travelling in daylight on longer trips outside major cities, and avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark. It says street lighting is poor or non-existent and that the risk of serious accidents and attacks on vehicles is greater at night.
That fits a simple rule for Ada: leave Accra in the morning, and leave Ada Foah in good time to clear the Kasseh road and the Tema section before sunset. If the day runs late, stay the night rather than drive back in the dark.
Sample day plan
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Leave Accra before the worst of the Tema traffic |
| Mid-morning | Arrive Ada Foah; boat trip to the estuary |
| Lunch | Eat by the river or at a resort |
| Early afternoon | Market (Wednesday or Saturday) or a beach walk |
| Mid to late afternoon | Leave for Accra |
| Before dark | Back in Accra |
Car rental & hire for an Ada day trip
Most visitors book the car in Accra or Tema rather than in Ada. Compare car hire & rental with a driver in Accra or firms in Tema, which is on the way.
Self-drive or a driver?
A driver means nobody in your group has to drive back tired after a day in the sun, and a local driver knows the Kasseh turn-off and the diversions near Tema. Our self-drive or chauffeur guide sets out the trade-offs. If you drive yourself, check the firm's mileage limits for a day trip out of the city.
Get driver waiting time in writing
Before you leave, agree these in writing (a WhatsApp message or email from the firm is fine):
| Agree in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pickup time and address | So the day starts early enough |
| Hours included and the charge for overtime | So a long lunch doesn't become a dispute |
| Waiting time at Ada Foah | So the driver waits while you're on the boat |
| Fuel, tolls and parking | So you know what's in the price |
| Driver's meals | Agree who pays, and how much |
| Latest return time | So you're back before dark |
Never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name. There's no site-wide price list here, because Ghana prices change often. Ask each firm for a dated written quote.
