How to Choose a Car Rental & Hire Company in Ghana

3 min read · Last checked: 18 October 2026

Quick answer: There is no single "best" car rental company in Ghana, and GhanaCarHire doesn't sell rankings. Choose on facts you can check: does the firm have its own website or business pages, does it state whether it offers self-drive or a driver, will it give you a written quote with what's included, and will you pay into an account in its business name? Compare a few firms on GhanaCarHire and read what the Verified badge means.

Your three options

International brands. Some global names operate in Ghana through local franchise partners. For example, Avis Ghana lists car rental, chauffeur drive, airport transfers and wedding cars, and Avis's own Accra location page shows an Accra office. A familiar brand can make booking from abroad feel easier, but the cars, insurance and terms are still set locally, so read them as carefully as you would with any firm.

Local car rental and hire firms. Most car rental in Ghana is run by local firms, from a few cars to large fleets. Many offer a car with a driver as standard, and some rent self-drive. Local firms often know the routes, events and seasonal demand best. Quality varies, which is why checking matters.

Booking sites and marketplaces. These let you compare cars from several suppliers. Check who actually supplies the car, who you pay, and who to call if something goes wrong on the day.

How to check a car rental firm

  • Look for its own presence: a website, business pages and a physical location. On GhanaCarHire, listing details come from each firm's own public pages, with sources shown on the firm's profile.
  • Check the Verified badge: on GhanaCarHire, Verified means we have checked copies of three documents: the business registration certificate, the owner's Ghana Card or passport, and vehicle insurance. It does not mean we have inspected the cars.
  • Ask for the exact car: make, model, year and recent photos.
  • Get the quote in writing: what's included (driver, fuel, tolls, mileage), the deposit, insurance and cancellation terms. Our guide to how car rental pricing works lists what to confirm.
  • Pay safely: pay only into an account in the firm's business name, never to a person who contacts you first. The UK FCDO warns that impostors have posed as drivers at the airport arrivals area, so confirm your driver's identity.

Self-drive or with a driver?

Many visitors choose a car with a driver, especially for a first trip or for long journeys. If you want to drive yourself, check the firm's licence rules and read our International Driving Permit guide. The US State Department and UK FCDO both describe difficult road conditions outside the main cities and advise against driving at night.

How GhanaCarHire lists firms

GhanaCarHire is a directory, not a car rental company. We list firms from their own public information and show where each detail came from. Featured firms pay for top placement, and that's labelled. We don't take a commission on bookings, and you contact firms directly.
