How to Book Ghana Car Hire & Rental from the UK or US Before You Fly

10 min read · Facts checked 14 October 2026

Quick answer: Yes — you can (and usually should) book Ghana car hire or car rental from the UK or US before you fly. Confirm the vehicle, dates, pickup point and total price in writing, pay only a modest deposit to a business you can verify, and arrange a named airport pickup with the driver’s photo and plate. For self-drive, bring your UK or US licence plus a 1949 International Driving Permit (IDP) — GOV.UK lists the 1949 permit for Ghana; US travellers get an IDP from AAA or AATA. Book 2–4 weeks ahead outside peak season, and earlier for December and Easter.

If you’re flying home for a wedding, Detty December, a family visit or a business trip, sorting transport from your sofa in London or Houston is far calmer than negotiating at the kerb after a long overnight flight. Most reputable Ghanaian firms take diaspora bookings by WhatsApp or email every week. The trick is knowing what to ask, what to prepare, and what not to pay for until you’re sure.

Why book before you land

Landing at Accra (Kotoka) International Airport (still widely known as Kotoka International Airport) after dark is tiring. The UK Foreign Office warns that British nationals have been robbed by impostors posing as drivers in the arrivals area. Pre-booking a firm that sends you the driver’s name, photo, phone and plate removes most of that risk.

Booking early also protects availability. AccraDrive’s FAQ (checked October 2026) says diaspora clients regularly book weeks ahead via WhatsApp or email, and recommends 2–4 weeks for weddings and weekend hiking trips, especially around December and Easter. Comparison site Bookingcar similarly suggests 2–4 weeks normally and 4–6 weeks for Christmas, Easter and major events when SUVs and minibuses go first. KAYAK’s Accra insights page suggests booking around 42 days ahead if you want a below-average comparison price (figure checked October 2026; it reflects KAYAK’s own booking data, not a government rule).

Same-day hire still exists in Accra, but choice shrinks and peak-season rates climb. If you need a specific automatic SUV, a child seat, or a chauffeured car waiting at Terminal 3, lock it in from abroad.

Self-drive or chauffeur: decide before you book

Most visitors from the UK or US do better with a chauffeur for the first few days, then switch to self-drive only if they know the roads. Accra traffic, police checkpoints and right-hand drive take getting used to. Our full comparison is in Self-drive or chauffeur in Ghana.

Choose a chauffeur when:

  • You’re landing late or during Detty December
  • You’re heading straight to a wedding or multi-stop family day
  • You haven’t driven on the right for years (UK drivers)
  • You want hotel-to-hotel door service without parking stress

Choose self-drive when:

  • You’ve driven in Ghana before, or you’re comfortable with city traffic
  • You’ll stay put in one area for several days
  • You have a valid licence, IDP and the deposit ready

Local firms often offer both. AccraDrive, for example, says sedans and SUVs can go either self-drive or chauffeured, while MPVs, vans and many 4x4s usually come with a driver. Ask which model you’re actually getting.

Documents to sort in the UK or US (before you fly)

UK licence holders

  • Your full UK photocard licence
  • A 1949 International Driving Permit — GOV.UK’s IDP table lists Ghana as needing the 1949 convention permit. You get one in person at participating PayPoint outlets; check the current GOV.UK process and fee before you travel
  • Your passport (and a photocopy of the photo page, which the FCDO recommends keeping separately)

The FCDO’s Ghana advice also says you can drive using “the 1949 version of the international driving permit… or a Ghanaian driving licence”. Carry both the licence and the IDP; the permit is a translation, not a replacement.

US licence holders

  • Your valid state driver’s licence
  • An International Driving Permit from AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) — these are the issuers the US State Department names. AAA’s public IDP pages describe a completed application, passport photos, a valid US licence and a fee (often quoted around $20; confirm locally)
  • Your passport and immigration documents

You cannot get a US IDP once you’re already overseas with only a foreign licence. Apply in the States before departure. AAA notes that an IDP cannot be issued more than six months before you will drive abroad.

What hire desks usually ask for

Requirements vary by firm. Examples we checked in October 2026:

  • Europcar at Accra airport (via a reseller listing): original driving licence plus IDP for foreign renters; photocopies not accepted; minimum age typically 21, with a young-driver fee around age 23
  • Nii Plants Car Rentals: self-drive renters aged 25+, full licence, Ghana Card or passport; IDP “strongly recommended” for visitors; refundable deposit at pickup
  • AccraDrive: Ghanaian or international licence held for at least 2 years, valid ID, and a refundable security deposit

For a chauffeured booking you usually need far less — passport or ID and payment details — because you’re not the named driver. That’s one reason many first-time visitors book a car with driver from abroad.

Full licence and insurance detail sits in our driving with a UK or US licence guide.

How the booking conversation usually works

Most independent Ghanaian firms don’t run a polished UK-style booking engine. Expect this pattern:

  1. Message on WhatsApp or email with your dates, passenger count, luggage, pickup point (airport terminal, hotel, or house address) and whether you want self-drive or a chauffeur.
  2. Receive a written quote covering the daily or trip rate, currency (cedis or dollars), fuel, driver’s meals or overnight allowance, mileage limits, overtime, airport fees, and the deposit.
  3. Ask for a recent video of the exact car, plus the firm’s registered name, address and a Google Maps pin.
  4. Pay a modest deposit once you’re happy — not the full balance — and keep screenshots of every term.
  5. Share your flight number so the driver can track delays. AccraDrive says flight-tracked pickups adjust for delays within a reasonable window at no extra charge; ask your firm for the same.

If anything feels off — pressure to pay the full amount now, no physical address, a price far below the market — stop and read how to avoid car hire scams in Ghana.

What it might cost (comparison figures, not quotes)

Prices move with season, vehicle class and whether a driver is included. Treat published averages as budgeting guides only.

Source (checked Oct 2026) What it says
KAYAK Accra Small cars about $72/day on average; SUVs around $165–166/day; luxury around $237/day. Cheapest recent search snippet showed from about $66/day.
AccraDrive blog Self-drive sedans from about GH₵800/day; SUVs GH₵950–1,400; MPVs/vans with driver GH₵1,200–2,200 for trips outside the city.
AccraDrive FAQ Security deposits from about GH₵600 for a compact sedan up to GH₵2,000 for a 4x4 or minibus; cancel more than 48 hours ahead for a full deposit refund on their terms.
Europcar Accra airport listing Security deposit band quoted roughly USD 300–5,000 by vehicle class (card pre-authorisation), with refund windows of several weeks.

Always get your own written quote. Currency matters: a “140” in dollars and a “140” in cedis are not the same booking. For a deeper Accra price walkthrough, see car hire cost in Accra.

Airport pickup vs city or hotel handover

Airport pickup at Accra (Kotoka) International Airport is the most popular diaspora choice. Agree:

  • Which terminal (international arrivals is usually Terminal 3 — confirm with your firm, as layouts change)
  • Where the driver will stand (inside arrivals with a name board, or at a specific kerb)
  • How long free waiting covers after landing
  • Whether the first night’s hotel drop-off is included

The FCDO advises confirming the driver’s identity and being wary of anyone who says your driver “sent them”. Permanent airport staff wear photo ID.

Hotel or residential pickup the next morning often costs less than an on-airport counter and suits travellers who already have a transfer sorted. Off-airport and city-centre rates are commonly lower than on-airport desks because of concession fees — comparison sites such as CheaperThanCars note airport surcharges can add roughly 20% in some markets; ask your Ghana firm what, if anything, they add for an airport meet-and-greet.

If you’re flying into Prempeh I International Airport (formerly Kumasi Airport) instead of Accra, book a Kumasi-based firm or confirm the Accra firm can stage a car there. See car hire in Kumasi and Takoradi.

A practical pre-flight checklist

Four weeks out (or earlier for December/Easter)

  • Shortlist 2–3 verified firms on Accra car hire or Kumasi
  • Decide chauffeur vs self-drive, vehicle class, and whether you need a child seat (some firms, including AccraDrive, say seats are free on request if mentioned at booking)
  • Start your IDP application if you’ll self-drive

Two weeks out

  • Lock the written quote, deposit and cancellation policy
  • Send the flight number and hotel address
  • Ask for the driver’s details once assigned

Forty-eight hours out

  • Reconfirm pickup time, plate and phone
  • Screenshot the WhatsApp thread
  • Pack licence, IDP, passport copy and travel insurance docs in your hand luggage

On landing

  • Connect to airport Wi‑Fi or turn on roaming before you exit
  • Message the driver; verify name board and ID before handing over bags
  • For self-drive: video the car (bodywork, tyres, windscreen, fuel, odometer) before you leave the lot

Peak season: Detty December and Easter

December through early January, and Easter weekends, are the hardest times to find good cars. AccraDrive and other operators warn that preferred vehicles and wedding convoys book out weeks ahead. If you’re travelling then:

  • Book transport when you book flights
  • Accept that chauffeur day rates will sit at the top of published ranges
  • Consider a multi-day package rather than day-by-day haggling

Our Detty December transport guide covers surge pricing and booking timelines in more detail.

Paying from abroad without getting burned

Never mention or rely on informal payment shortcuts you can’t reverse. Practical habits that work for diaspora clients:

  • Pay a deposit, not 100% up front, until you’ve met the car or the driver
  • Prefer methods that leave a clear record to a named business
  • Agree whether the balance is due in cedis or dollars, and whether card or cash at handover attracts a surcharge
  • Keep the firm’s company name on the receipt

We do not list personal bank details or mobile-money numbers on this site. If a stranger asks you to pay into a personal account with no company name, treat that as a red flag and walk away — details in the scams guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book Ghana car hire from the UK or US before I fly?

Yes. Many Accra and Kumasi firms take diaspora bookings by WhatsApp or email weeks ahead. Confirm vehicle, dates, pickup point, total price and deposit in writing, then share your flight number for a tracked airport meet.

How far in advance should I book?

Outside peak season, 2–4 weeks is a common recommendation from local operators such as AccraDrive. For December, Easter and major events, aim for 4–6 weeks or earlier, especially for SUVs, minibuses and wedding convoys. KAYAK’s Accra tip suggests around 42 days for a below-average comparison price (checked October 2026).

Do I need an International Driving Permit for Ghana?

For self-drive, yes in practice. GOV.UK lists the 1949 IDP for Ghana. The US State Department advises an international driver’s licence from AAA or AATA, or a Ghanaian licence. Chauffeured hire does not require you to hold an IDP because you are not driving.

What documents do car rental desks ask for?

Expect a passport, your home licence, an IDP for foreign self-drive renters, and a refundable security deposit. Age floors are often 21–25 and some firms want the licence held for 1–2 years. Always confirm with your chosen firm before you fly.

Should I pick up at the airport or in the city?

Airport pickup is best if you want a driver waiting after immigration. City or hotel handover can be cheaper and calmer the next morning. Either way, get the driver’s name, photo and plate in advance — the FCDO warns of fake drivers at the airport.

How much deposit will I pay?

It depends on the firm and vehicle. AccraDrive publishes deposits from about GH₵600 up to GH₵2,000 for larger vehicles; an Europcar Accra airport listing quotes a wide USD 300–5,000 card hold band. Ask how and when the deposit is refunded after a clean inspection.

Is WhatsApp booking safe?

It can be, if you verify the business first (address, reviews, video of the car) and never send the full balance to an unverified personal account. Use WhatsApp for coordination, then insist on a written quote you can screenshot.

Ready to book from abroad

Browse firms in Accra, compare airport transfers, chauffeurs and self-drive options, or check Kumasi if you’re flying into Prempeh I International Airport. Lock the car before you pack the suitcase — you’ll thank yourself at arrivals.
