Bus and Minibus Hire in Accra: Group Car Hire & Rental for Churches, Schools and Events
Quick answer: Bus rentals in Accra almost always come with a driver. Firms list three main sizes: a 14-seat minibus such as a Toyota Hiace, a 28 to 30-seat Toyota Coaster, and a 50-seat coach. Published starting prices checked on 18 October 2026 run from about GH₵1,600 a day for a Hiace to GH₵6,500 or more a day for a 50-seater within Accra, and trips outside Accra are priced by route. Before you book, ask what a "day" means in hours, who pays for fuel, the driver's allowance and overnight costs, and get the quote in writing.
Bus hire in Accra is how church groups, schools, companies, conference organisers, wedding families and tour groups move 10 to 50 people together. This guide is for anyone arranging group transport in the city, whether you live in Accra, you're a Ghanaian abroad organising from London, Toronto or Dubai, or you're a visitor bringing a team or a tour group from anywhere in the world. It covers bus and minibus sizes, how firms price group car hire & rental, what's usually included, and the safety checks that matter for each kind of trip.
Bus and minibus sizes firms list in Accra
Seat counts on a website are a maximum. Several firms say plainly that fewer people fit once luggage is on board, so count bags as well as heads.
| Size | Typical vehicles | What firms say it carries |
|---|---|---|
| People carrier | Toyota Sienna | 7 seats (AccraDrive) |
| Large van | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter | 7 to 12 seats (Uprise Travel Car Rentals) |
| Minibus | Toyota Hiace | 14 seats (AccraDrive); 5 to 14 passengers, or 5 to 10 with luggage (Caradise Ghana) |
| Midsize bus | Toyota Coaster | 28 seats (AccraDrive); up to 30 (Primo); 15 to 28 passengers, or 15 to 21 with luggage (Caradise Ghana) |
| Full-size coach | KIA Granbird and similar | 29 to 50 passengers (Caradise Ghana); 50-seater bus (AccraDrive) |
Caradise Ghana notes that its Toyota Coaster is often called a "30-seater bus" in Accra, but says it comfortably carries 15 to 28 passengers without luggage. If a quote says "30-seater", ask how many adults it seats comfortably for your trip length.
Use a private hire, not tro-tros, for the group. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) says drivers of tro-tros (shared minibuses) and popular app-based taxi services are not centrally licensed, and that outside major towns and cities it's safer to use pre-booked vehicles from reputable companies.
How bus hire is priced: per day or per trip
There's no standard price list in Accra. Firms price group hire in different ways, which is why two quotes for "a Coaster on Saturday" can look very different. These are starting prices from the firms' own websites, checked 18 October 2026. They aren't quotes.
| Firm and vehicle | Published starting price | How it's priced |
|---|---|---|
| AccraDrive: Sienna / Hiace / Coaster | GH₵1,200 / GH₵1,600 / GH₵2,200 a day | Per day within Accra, driver included; outside Accra quoted by route |
| AccraDrive: 50-seater bus | From GH₵6,500 a day | Per day within Accra |
| Caradise Ghana: Toyota Hiace | From GH₵2,600 ($240) within Accra; from GH₵4,100 ($360) outside | Within or outside Accra; driver and fuel included |
| Caradise Ghana: Toyota Coaster | From GH₵3,400 ($320) within Accra; from GH₵5,600 ($490) outside | As above |
| Caradise Ghana: KIA Granbird coach | From GH₵6,900 ($640) within Accra; from GH₵11,300 ($1,030) outside | As above |
| Primo: Toyota Coaster | From GH₵1,700 a day | 12-hour day; fuel not included |
What the three pricing styles mean in practice:
- Daily rate within Accra (AccraDrive, Primo). You pay for the bus and driver by the day inside the city. AccraDrive says trips outside Accra are quoted by route. Its fleet page also says hourly rental is available within Accra with a four-hour minimum plus a call-out fee, and that weekly rentals get 10% off the daily rate and monthly rentals 25% off. Ask whether those terms apply to its vans and buses.
- Within-Accra or outside-Accra price (Caradise Ghana). Caradise publishes two starting prices for each vehicle and says the final price depends on the destination, itinerary, pickup location and rental length. Its separate 30-seater bus page quotes the Coaster from GH₵3,600 a day with fuel included, slightly different from its van rental page, which is a good reminder to get one written figure for your exact plan.
- Route-based quotes for trips out of town. For a retreat in Aburi, a school trip to Cape Coast or a tour to Kumasi, expect a price for the whole journey rather than a simple daily rate. Give every firm the same itinerary so you can compare like with like.
Prices for funeral weekends are covered in our funeral transport guide, which quotes the same firms for that occasion.
What's included, and driver allowances
The biggest differences between quotes are usually fuel, the driver's allowance, overtime and the driver's overnight costs. Only some firms publish these, so ask every firm in writing.
- Caradise Ghana says its price covers the vehicle, the driver's allowance, insurance, fuel and applicable fees such as airport parking, plus the driver's accommodation on overnight stays outside Accra.
- Primo says its chauffeured rentals cover 12 hours a day, with drivers finishing by 8pm for rentals that start at noon or earlier. It charges half a day's rate from 8pm to 11pm and a full day after 11pm. It says the driver's allowance is included, but fuel is not, and for trips of more than a day outside Accra the client provides or pays for the driver's accommodation.
- AccraDrive says its vans and minibuses come with a chauffeur as standard and lists comprehensive insurance on every rental. Its van page doesn't publish a separate driver's allowance or overnight cost, so ask how those are charged on a trip outside Accra.
If a firm doesn't publish a driver's allowance, don't assume there isn't one. Ask whether the quote includes the driver's meals, waiting time, overtime and lodging, and get the answer in the booking confirmation.
Church groups, conventions and retreats
Churches hire buses for conventions, crusades, retreats, choir trips and end-of-year services. The Ghana News Agency reported in December 2023 that the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) asked religious leaders to use their platforms to promote road safety, noting that the festive season brings more vehicles and people on the road for conventions and 31st watch night services. The NRSA urged them to encourage members to respect speed limits, wear seatbelts and avoid dangerous manoeuvres.
For a church trip:
- Book early for December and Easter. AccraDrive says booking two to four weeks ahead is safest for weekend events and peak season, which it describes as October to January and Easter.
- Put one coordinator in charge of the passenger list, pickup points and the driver's phone number.
- Ask for seatbelts in every seat and don't board more people than there are seats.
- Plan the return before dark if the venue is outside Accra (see long trips below).
School trips and student groups
School excursions need the strictest checks, because children can't judge a vehicle or a driver for themselves. For regular school bus services, the NRSA says the National Road Safety Authority Regulations, 2022 (L.I. 2468) require vehicles to be fit for purpose, drivers trained to carry school children, safe areas for loading and pickup, a responsible adult on board to supervise, and vehicles marked as carrying school children.
Those rules are written for school bus services, but they make a sensible checklist for a hired excursion bus too. In January 2022 the Ghana News Agency reported that the NRSA had found some school buses with substandard tyres and seats, no seatbelts and no retro-reflective tape, as well as overloading and drivers stopping at unsafe places to pick up children.
Before a school trip, ask the firm:
- Does every seat have a working seatbelt?
- How many children will the bus seat, one per seat?
- Can we see the actual vehicle, or a recent photo, before the day?
- What is the driver's name, and how long has he or she driven buses?
- Where exactly will the bus load and unload, away from traffic?
Send at least one teacher or adult supervisor on every bus.
Corporate staff transport and conference shuttles
Companies, NGOs and conference organisers use minibuses and Coasters for airport arrivals, hotel-to-venue loops and site visits. A daily rate usually suits a shuttle, but check the length of the "day". On Primo's published terms, for example, a chauffeured day covers 12 hours, drivers finish by 8pm on rentals that start by noon, and later hours are charged as overtime, which matters for evening receptions and gala dinners.
- Share a written timetable with every pickup point and time.
- Agree how overtime is charged before the first day, not at the end of the event.
- Allow extra time for disruption. The FCDO says demonstrations in Accra can happen at short notice and cause disruption, and that heavy rain can cause flooding in urban areas such as Accra that disrupts road travel.

Wedding and event guest transport
A minibus or Coaster is often the simplest way to move guests between a church, a reception venue and hotels. Book the guest shuttle at the same time as the bridal cars so they run to the same timetable, and give the driver the programme, every address and a named contact. Our wedding cars guide explains how convoys work for big family occasions.
Group arrivals at the airport
For a choir, sports team, delegation or family arriving together at Accra International Airport (formerly Kotoka), one bus is easier than several taxis. Count suitcases carefully: Caradise rates its Hiace at 5 to 10 passengers with luggage, against 14 without.
The FCDO advises confirming your driver's identity by asking for ID when you're collected at the airport, because travellers have been robbed by impostors pretending to be their driver around the main arrivals area. Ask the firm for the driver's name and phone number before you fly.
Tours and long trips outside Accra
Day trips and multi-day tours are where bus hire costs and risks rise.
- Travel in daylight. The FCDO advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, when the risk of serious accidents is much greater. For longer trips outside major cities, it recommends travelling in daylight, in a convoy of at least two vehicles, and getting advice from local police.
- Plan rest and a second driver. The NRSA advises drivers to take a break on journeys of more than 8 hours or 500 km, and says long-distance commercial transport operators must provide two drivers per bus for such journeys. Ask how the firm handles this on your route.
- Agree overnight costs. Find out who pays for the driver's lodging and meals on a multi-day trip, as firms handle this differently (see above).
Checking the firm before you pay
Group bookings involve larger deposits, so take a few minutes to check the firm.
- Ask whether the firm is registered with the NRSA. The NRSA said that from March 2024, road transport service providers, including transport companies, unions and school bus services, are required by law to register with it.
- Get a written quote naming the vehicle, seat count, dates, hours, route and everything included.
- Read the deposit and cancellation terms. Caradise, for example, says it asks for a 50% deposit and refunds in full if you cancel 72 hours or more before the booking.
- Pay only to an account in the firm's registered business name, and be wary of last-minute changes to payment details. Our guide to avoiding car hire scams in Ghana explains the warning signs.
To compare firms that offer vehicles with drivers, see our car hire with a driver in Accra page, or search by town on our car hire search page and ask two or three firms for quotes on the same details.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to rent a bus in Accra?
On 18 October 2026, firms' own websites showed a 14-seat Toyota Hiace from GH₵1,600 a day (AccraDrive) and a Toyota Coaster from GH₵1,700 a day (Primo, fuel not included) to GH₵2,200 a day (AccraDrive) within Accra. Caradise Ghana listed a Coaster from GH₵3,400 within Accra with driver and fuel included. A 50-seater was from GH₵6,500 a day at AccraDrive. Trips outside Accra are priced by route.
Do bus rentals in Accra come with a driver?
Yes. The firms quoted in this guide supply their minibuses, Coasters and coaches with a driver. AccraDrive and Caradise Ghana both say their vans are chauffeured only.
What size bus do I need for 20 people?
A Toyota Coaster is the usual choice. Caradise Ghana rates its Coaster for 15 to 28 passengers without luggage, or 15 to 21 with luggage, and AccraDrive lists a 28-seat Coaster. For more than about 28 people, or a lot of luggage, ask for a full-size coach.
Is fuel included when you hire a bus in Accra?
It depends on the firm. Caradise Ghana says its prices include fuel. Primo says fuel is not included in chauffeured rentals. Always ask, and get the answer in writing.
Do I have to pay the driver's allowance separately?
Only some firms publish this. Caradise Ghana and Primo both say the driver's allowance is included in their prices, while Primo says the client covers the driver's accommodation on trips of more than a day outside Accra. Ask every firm whether the driver's allowance, meals, overtime and lodging are in the quote.
How far ahead should I book a bus in Accra?
AccraDrive suggests two to four weeks ahead for weekend events and peak season, which it describes as October to January and Easter. Book earlier for large coaches and December dates.
Can I book group transport in Accra from abroad?
Yes. Firms on GhanaCarHire show a phone or WhatsApp contact, so you can arrange things from anywhere. Send the same itinerary to two or three firms, confirm the vehicle and driver in writing, and ask someone in Ghana to see the vehicle before the day if possible.
Next steps
Count your passengers and bags, write down your timetable and route, and ask two or three firms for written quotes on the same details. Check what a "day" means, who pays for fuel, the driver's allowance and overnight costs, and plan long journeys for daylight.
