Funeral Transport in Ghana: Car Hire & Rental, Buses and Drivers
Quick answer: Funeral transport in Ghana usually means hiring a few cars and a minibus or coach with drivers for a long weekend, often from Friday to Sunday, to move family and mourners between the mortuary, the family house, the church, the cemetery and the funeral grounds. Confirm the family's programme first, because some traditional areas fix their own funeral days. Book early, get a written quote for the exact vehicle and seats, avoid long journeys after dark, and pay deposits only to an account in the firm's registered name.
Losing someone is hard enough without worrying about buses. This guide is for anyone arranging or attending a funeral in Ghana: families organising the weekend, Ghanaians flying home from the UK, the US, Europe, the Gulf or elsewhere in Africa, and friends, colleagues and church groups travelling together. It explains how car hire & rental for a funeral works, what to hire, what published prices look like, and how to book safely from abroad.
How a funeral weekend shapes your transport
There's no single national schedule, but a common pattern is easy to recognise. Writing on MyJoyOnline, the Ghanaian journalist Elizabeth Ohene described how, in many parts of the country, Fridays are when bodies are taken home from the mortuary to be laid in state, Saturdays are for services, burials and funeral rites, and Sundays are for thanksgiving services. She added that many people spend their weekends travelling to funerals around the country.
That pattern isn't universal, so always work from the family's printed programme. The Ghana News Agency reported that the Gbi Traditional Council near Hohoe in the Volta Region set the first Saturday of every month as the approved day for burials and funeral rites in its area from 1 January 2024, partly to reduce the cost of travelling almost every weekend. It also said burials there would be at designated public cemeteries rather than homes. Other areas may have their own rules, so ask the family or the local traditional authority before you book.
A 2018 opinion piece on MyJoyOnline about the funeral industry noted that transport companies get busy over weekends, from Friday to Sunday, and that local hotels and guesthouses are booked well in advance. Treat a funeral weekend like a peak date and book cars, buses and rooms together.
| Day (common pattern) | What often happens | Transport you may need |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | Body brought home; lying in state | Cars for close family; travel to the hometown |
| Saturday | Burial service, burial, funeral rites | Minibus or coach for mourners; cars for elders |
| Sunday | Thanksgiving service | Short local runs, then the journey home |
| Monday | Family meets to settle accounts | Airport drop-offs and long-distance returns |
What to hire
Match the vehicle to the people, not the other way round.
- A car with a driver for close family and elderly relatives who need comfort and a quiet space. Compare firms on our car hire with a driver in Accra page, or our Kumasi car hire with a driver page if the funeral is in the Ashanti Region.
- A minibus for a small group. Caradise Ghana says on its own website that its Toyota Hiace suits 5 to 14 passengers without luggage, or 5 to 10 with luggage.
- A midsize bus such as a Toyota Coaster, which Caradise rates for 15 to 28 passengers without luggage, or 15 to 21 with luggage.
- A full-size coach for a church group, association or workplace. Caradise lists a KIA Granbird coach for 29 to 50 passengers.
Don't rely on tro-tros for the main group. The US State Department says small private buses known as tro-tros are not safe and doesn't allow its own staff to use them. A private minibus or coach with a named driver is easier to coordinate and to hold to account.
The hearse is a separate booking. Ask the funeral home or undertaker what they provide. This guide covers transport for the family and mourners, and GhanaCarHire doesn't currently list specialist hearse services.
Published bus and minibus prices
Few firms publish group transport prices. These come from the firms' own websites, checked on 17 October 2026. They're starting prices, not quotes, so ask for a written price for your exact route and dates.
| Firm and vehicle | Within Accra | Outside Accra |
|---|---|---|
| Caradise Ghana: Toyota Hiace | From GH₵2,600 ($240) | From GH₵4,100 ($360) |
| Caradise Ghana: Toyota Coaster | From GH₵3,400 ($320) | From GH₵5,600 ($490) |
| Caradise Ghana: KIA Granbird coach | From GH₵6,900 ($640) | From GH₵11,300 ($1,030) |
| AccraDrive: Coaster minibus (28 seats) | GH₵2,200/day | Quoted by route |
| AccraDrive: 50-seater bus | From GH₵6,500/day | Quoted by route |
Caradise says its prices include the driver, the driver's allowance, insurance and fuel, and the driver's accommodation for overnight stays outside Accra, and that the final price depends on the destination, itinerary, pickup point and rental length. AccraDrive says vehicles outside Accra are quoted by route. None of the firms that list buses on GhanaCarHire publish prices on their listings, so ask two or three of them for quotes on the same details.
Planning the convoy and the day
A funeral day runs to the family's programme, and people move between several places. A little planning keeps everyone together.
- Name one coordinator on the family side who holds the programme and talks to every driver.
- Send every driver the same plan: each address or GPS location, the start time, and where to wait.
- Agree waiting time in advance. Services and funeral rites can run long, so ask how the firm charges if the driver waits all day.
- Count passengers and luggage honestly. Bags, gifts and food for the trip need room too. Never put more people in a vehicle than it has seats.
- Use the same approach as a wedding convoy. Our wedding cars guide explains how firms run multi-car convoys for big family occasions.
If the family has set a dress code for the weekend, tell the firm, and ask for clean, plain vehicles with the music kept low.
Long journeys, night travel and drivers
Many funerals take place in the hometown, so a long drive is often part of the weekend.
- Avoid long drives after dark. The US State Department says travelling at night, particularly outside the major cities, is extremely dangerous because of poor street lighting and pedestrians, cyclists and animals on the road. It also says many accidents happen on the Accra–Cape Coast and Accra–Kumasi highways. Leave early enough to arrive in daylight, or stay over and travel back on Sunday or Monday.
- Plan rest and a second driver. The National Road Safety Authority advises drivers to take a break on journeys of more than 8 hours or 500 km, and says long-distance commercial transport operators must provide two drivers per bus for such journeys. Ask the firm how it handles this on a long trip.
- Insist on a sober driver. The NRSA warns against driving after drinking, with a legal limit of 0.08% blood alcohol content. The 2018 MyJoyOnline opinion piece described Saturday evenings, when people head home from funerals and alcohol is often involved, as a high-risk time on the roads. Agree in writing that your hired driver won't drink at any point during the hire.
Booking from abroad
If you're organising from London, New York, Toronto, Düsseldorf or Dubai, you'll be doing most of this by phone and WhatsApp.
- Get the programme first: dates, towns, venues and times.
- Work out numbers: passengers, luggage and any elderly or disabled travellers.
- Ask two or three firms for written quotes with the same details, so you can compare like with like.
- Confirm the exact vehicle and seat count, and ask for a recent photo of the actual vehicle.
- Get the driver's name and phone number a few days before.
- Check what's included: fuel, driver's allowance, overnight costs, waiting time and tolls.
- Read the cancellation terms. Caradise, for example, says it needs a 50% deposit to secure a booking, refunds in full if you cancel 72 hours or more before, and may give a partial or no refund inside 72 hours.
- Ask a relative in Ghana to see the vehicle or meet the driver before the day, if they can.
The US State Department notes that Ghana is on Greenwich Mean Time all year and doesn't use daylight saving time, which helps when you're arranging calls from another time zone. If you're flying in, book your pickup at Accra International Airport (formerly Kotoka) at the same time. Our guide to booking Ghana car hire from the UK or US covers documents, deposits and airport pickups in more detail.
Paying deposits safely
Funerals are emotional and often rushed, which is exactly when payment scams work. Our guide to avoiding car hire scams in Ghana explains the warning signs. In short:
- Pay only to an account in the firm's registered business name, never to a personal account suggested by someone you haven't checked.
- Get a written booking confirmation and a receipt for every payment.
- Be suspicious of last-minute changes to payment details or "urgent" requests to pay more before the day.
- Don't pay the full amount up front unless the firm's written terms require it and you've checked the firm.
Firms on GhanaCarHire that list buses
Several firms listed on GhanaCarHire say they offer minibuses or coaches with drivers. These listings are unclaimed and not yet verified, and the details come from the firms' own public pages:
- A1 Car & Bus Rental (Accra, Tema and Cape Coast) lists car, minibus and coach rental with 14, 29 and 45-seater buses for group transport.
- Tuga Rentals & Logistics (Accra) lists luxury minibus and coach rental for corporate and group transport.
- Caradise Ghana and AccraDrive (Accra) list Toyota Hiace and Coaster vehicles with drivers.
Search by town on our car hire search page to find firms near the funeral venue, and ask each one the questions above.
Frequently asked questions
When are funerals usually held in Ghana?
Many funerals follow a weekend pattern: the body is brought home and laid in state on Friday, the burial and funeral rites are on Saturday, and a thanksgiving service is held on Sunday. Some traditional areas set their own days, such as the first Saturday of the month in the Gbi Traditional Area, so check the family's programme.
Can I hire a bus with a driver for a funeral in Ghana?
Yes. Several firms listed on GhanaCarHire offer minibuses such as the Toyota Hiace, midsize Coaster buses and full-size coaches with drivers. Ask for a written quote for your exact route, dates and number of passengers.
How much does it cost to hire a bus for a funeral?
Published prices vary by vehicle and route. On 17 October 2026, Caradise Ghana's website showed a Toyota Coaster from GH₵3,400 within Accra and from GH₵5,600 outside Accra, and AccraDrive listed a 28-seat Coaster at GH₵2,200 a day within Accra. Prices for trips outside Accra depend on the route.
Can I book funeral transport in Ghana from abroad?
Yes. Firms on GhanaCarHire show a phone or WhatsApp contact on their listings, so you can arrange things from anywhere. Get the programme first, ask two or three firms for written quotes, confirm the vehicle and driver, and ask a relative in Ghana to check the vehicle if possible.
How do I pay a deposit safely?
Pay only to an account in the firm's registered business name, get a written confirmation and receipt, and be wary of last-minute changes to payment details. Our scams guide explains the warning signs in full.
Is it safe to travel back from a funeral at night?
Official US advice says night travel outside the major cities is extremely dangerous. Plan to drive in daylight, stay over if needed, and make sure your hired driver doesn't drink during the hire.
Do car hire firms provide hearses?
Treat the hearse as a separate booking and ask the funeral home or undertaker. GhanaCarHire lists firms offering cars, minibuses and coaches for mourners, not specialist hearse services.
Next steps
Get the family's programme, count your passengers, then ask two or three firms for written quotes on the same details. Book early, plan to travel in daylight, and pay deposits only once you've checked the firm.
