Car Hire & Rental in Takoradi for Oil & Gas and Business Visitors
Quick answer: For car rental in Takoradi, most business visitors fly into Takoradi Airport (TKD) from Accra and book a car with a driver before they land. The airport sits at Air Force Base Takoradi and handles domestic flights: Africa World Airlines says it runs up to three flights a day to Takoradi, and PassionAir also lists Takoradi among its destinations (both checked 19 October 2026). There's no rental desk to rely on, so pre-book the pickup, agree the day rate, hours and driver allowances in writing, and plan road trips for daylight.
Sekondi-Takoradi, the Western Region's capital, is a working port city, and Ghana's Aviation Minister described the Western Region in 2020 as the home of the country's oil and gas industry. This guide is for anyone travelling there for work: energy and mining staff, contractors, auditors, consultants, NGO teams and conference delegates, whether you're flying in from Accra, Lagos, Johannesburg, Dubai, London or Houston, or you already live in Ghana. It covers arriving at Takoradi Airport, hiring a corporate driver, how car hire & rental pricing works in Takoradi, and the safety advice that matters most for business trips.
Takoradi Airport (TKD): what to expect
Takoradi Airport is a shared airfield. The Ghana Air Force runs Air Force Base Takoradi, and the airport's civilian terminal handles scheduled domestic flights. When the terminal was being renovated in 2020, the Aviation Minister said the airport mattered because it serves the oil and gas industry as well as the mining industry, according to a GNA report carried by MyJoyOnline. The works covered the terminal building, an expanded arrivals and departures hall, and the airport's oil and gas facility.
| Key fact | What we found (checked 19 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Airport code | TKD |
| Who runs the airfield | Ghana Air Force (Air Force Base Takoradi) |
| Scheduled flights | Domestic, including from Accra |
| Airlines | Africa World Airlines (up to 3 flights a day, per its website); PassionAir (lists Takoradi as a destination) |
| International flights | None scheduled that we could verify. International visitors usually connect through Accra International Airport (formerly Kotoka) |

Timetables change, so check the airline's own website when you book. If your flight is delayed or moved, tell your driver straight away.
Getting to Takoradi from Accra by road
If you'd rather drive, or your flight is cancelled, the N1 coast road runs west from Accra via Cape Coast. Using Graphic Online figures (about 145 km Accra–Cape Coast plus the 73.6 km Cape Coast–Takoradi section), it's roughly 220 km, and the Cape Coast–Takoradi stretch is being dualised, so expect roadworks. Allow most of a day and travel in daylight. Our Accra to Takoradi by road guide has the route, timings and stops.
Self-drive or a corporate driver?
For most business trips to Takoradi, a car with a driver is the better choice:
- Your time is billed. A driver drops you at the door, waits, and handles parking while you're in meetings.
- You don't need to know the roads. A local driver knows the routes to the port, industrial areas and hotels, and can advise which roads to avoid after heavy rain.
- Safety and duty of care. The UK FCDO says roads can be in poor condition, street lighting is poor or non-existent, and you should avoid road travel outside the main towns after dark. The US State Department describes night travel outside major cities as extremely dangerous.
- Paperwork. If you do drive yourself, the FCDO says you can use the 1949 International Driving Permit or a Ghanaian licence, and should carry your driving documents.
Self-drive can still make sense if you live in Ghana, know the Western Region, or are staying for weeks and want a car on standby. Our guide to whether it's safe to drive in Ghana covers the risks in more detail.
What to ask for in a corporate driver
If your employer or host company has a travel-security or driver policy, send it to the firm before you book and ask them to confirm in writing that they can meet it. Even if you have no formal policy, ask:
- Who is the driver? Name, phone number and a photo before arrival, and how long they've driven professionally.
- What vehicle? Make, model, year and registration, working seat belts in every seat, air conditioning, and whether it's an SUV or saloon.
- What are the working hours? Start time, finish time, and what happens if a site visit or dinner runs late.
- Is it the same driver every day? Continuity matters on a week-long trip.
- What's the back-up plan? A replacement car and driver if the vehicle breaks down.
- What insurance is in place? Ask whether cover is comprehensive or third-party only, and what you'd pay towards any damage.
- Can they invoice your company? If you need a company invoice or receipts for expenses, ask before you book.
The same checklist works for a fleet of vans for a project team or conference group. For more on briefing a chauffeur, see our guide to chauffeur car hire & rental for business trips and conferences, written for Accra but just as useful in Takoradi.
Firms listed in Takoradi and the Western Region
GhanaCarHire lists more than a dozen car rental firms in and around Takoradi (checked 19 October 2026). See them all on our car rental and hire in Takoradi page. Firms offering airport pickups are on our Takoradi Airport transfer page, and you can send one enquiry to up to five firms from either page.
At the time of checking, most Takoradi listings had not yet been claimed by the firm, and many don't say whether they offer self-drive, a driver or airport transfers. That doesn't mean they aren't genuine. It does mean you should ask them directly, and check them before you pay anything. Our guide to choosing a car rental and hire company in Ghana explains how to vet a firm.
Some firms with offices in Accra also list branches in Takoradi. That can help if you want one company for a trip that covers both cities, or a one-way rental. Ask in writing about one-way fees and who returns the car.
How car hire & rental pricing works in Takoradi
We don't publish price lists or averages: rates in Ghana change often, and each firm sets its own. Where a firm publishes prices, you'll find them on its own GhanaCarHire page. What usually goes into a business quote:
| Item | What to confirm in writing |
|---|---|
| Day rate | Whether it's per calendar day or a set number of hours (for example 8 or 10), and with or without a driver |
| Overtime | The hourly charge after the agreed hours, and whether late-night runs cost more |
| Driver allowances | Meals and, on overnight trips away from Takoradi, the driver's accommodation |
| Fuel | Included, or charged separately; and whether long trips out of town are priced differently |
| Airport pickup | Whether the TKD pickup is part of the day rate or a separate transfer charge |
| Longer bookings | Weekly or monthly rates for long assignments or project teams |
| Deposit and payment | How much, when, and to which account. Pay only to an account in the firm's registered business name |
Ask two or three firms for a written quote for the same car, dates and hours. That's the quickest way to see what a fair rate looks like for your trip.
Safety advice for business visitors
The FCDO and the US State Department both publish advice that's directly relevant to working visits to Takoradi:
- Criminal kidnap. The FCDO says there have been media reports of criminally motivated kidnapping in Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi, including the targeting of foreign nationals. Follow your employer's security advice, vary routines where you can, and keep your itinerary to people who need it.
- Vehicle crime. The FCDO says attacks on vehicles are increasing. Keep windows up and doors locked, especially when the car is stationary in traffic.
- Pre-booked transport. The FCDO says that outside major towns and cities it's safer to use pre-booked vehicles from reputable taxi companies. The same logic applies to a pre-booked car and driver from a firm you've checked.
- Night driving. Plan any out-of-town trips (to sites, mines or beaches west of the city) so you're back before dark.
- Arriving via Accra. The US State Department says armed robbers sometimes target vehicles coming from Accra International Airport. If you're overnighting in Accra before your Takoradi flight, use a pre-booked driver for that leg too.
