Accra to Takoradi by Road: Route, Time, Stops and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: Accra to Takoradi is a drive west along the N1 coast road through Kasoa, Winneba and Cape Coast. Accra to Cape Coast is about 145 km (Graphic Online) and the Cape Coast–Takoradi section of the N1 is 73.6 km (Graphic Online), so the whole trip is roughly 220 km. Allow most of a day: Graphic reported in 2026 that the Cape Coast–Takoradi stretch alone takes about two hours, and that section is being dualised, so expect roadworks. Leave early, drive in daylight, or fly and rent or hire a car in Takoradi.
Sekondi-Takoradi is the capital of the Western Region and a working port city. This guide is for anyone heading there from Accra: business visitors (including the oil and gas sector), families going home, and travellers on their way to the beaches and forts west of the city. It covers the route, how long to allow, flying instead, and how to arrange car rental and hire with a driver at either end.
The route
From Accra the N1 runs west through Kasoa, Winneba and Mankessim to Cape Coast, then on past the turnings for Elmina and through Shama District to Takoradi. It's one road most of the way, part of the coastal N1 corridor that Graphic describes as stretching from Aflao on the Togo border to Elubo on the Côte d'Ivoire border.
The first leg, Accra to Cape Coast, is covered in detail in our Accra to Cape Coast road trip guide, including the Kasoa traffic and the stops along the way.
How long does it take?
There's no official journey time, and traffic decides most of it. What the sources tell us:
- Accra to Cape Coast: about 145 km. Congestion around Kasoa is the main delay leaving Accra; our Cape Coast guide suggests allowing at least three hours.
- Cape Coast to Takoradi: 73.6 km. Graphic Online reported in 2026 that this stretch currently takes about two hours.
So plan on five hours or more, with a break in Cape Coast. Leave Accra early in the morning so you arrive in daylight.
Roadworks on the Cape Coast–Takoradi section
The single-carriageway Cape Coast–Takoradi road is being turned into a dual carriageway under the government's Big Push programme. The President cut the sod in October 2025, and the Ghana News Agency reported the project was expected to take 24 months and, once finished, to cut travel time between Takoradi and Accra by about half.
Progress has been uneven. On 16 September 2026, 3News reported that the Roads and Highways Minister had ordered warning letters to a contractor over slow work on part of the route. Until the works are finished, expect diversions, dust and slower stretches, and add time to your plan.
Safety on the road
The UK FCDO advises against travelling by road outside the main towns after dark, and the US State Department says driving in Ghana can be very dangerous, especially at night. For this trip that means:
- Set off early so the whole drive is in daylight.
- Take breaks: Cape Coast is the natural halfway stop.
- Overtake with care on single-carriageway sections and around the roadworks.
- If you're not used to driving in Ghana, consider a driver who knows the road.
Flying instead
Takoradi Airport (TKD) has domestic flights from Accra. PassionAir lists Takoradi among its destinations, and other domestic airlines have also served the route. Schedules change, so check with the airlines when you book. Flying and then renting or hiring a car with a driver in Takoradi is often the simplest plan for a short business trip. Firms that offer pickups are on our Takoradi airport transfer page.
Stops along the way
- Cape Coast and Elmina: the castles are part of the UNESCO World Heritage forts and castles listing. Kakum National Park is a short detour inland from Cape Coast.
- Beyond Takoradi: the beaches and forts at Busua, Butre and Dixcove, and further west at Axim, are covered in our Kumasi and Takoradi guide.
Car rental and hire for this trip
You have three main options:
- Rent or hire in Accra with a driver for the whole trip. One car and one driver, no changeovers. Agree in writing what happens on overnight stays (the driver's room and meals) and on the return journey.
- Self-drive from Accra. Fine for confident drivers who know Ghana. You'll need your licence and a 1949 International Driving Permit; see our IDP guide.
- Fly to Takoradi and rent or hire locally. Compare firms on our car rental and hire in Takoradi page.
Ask about one-way trips before you book: if you drive one way and fly back, the firm has to get the car home. Prices change often, so check each firm's own page and get a written quote; our guide to how car rental pricing works in Ghana explains what to confirm.
