Accra to Cape Coast Road Trip: Route, Timings, Stops & Car Hire
Quick answer: Cape Coast is about 165 km west of Accra (NCRC distance chart) along the coastal N1, a drive of roughly 2.5–3.5 hours each way. Most of the variation comes from traffic at Kasoa, so leave Accra by about 6am. The highlights are Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage property, and the Kakum canopy walkway about 33 km north of Cape Coast. Done as a day trip it's a long day; an overnight stay is more relaxed. A chauffeur day trip from Accra is published from $190 (Transparent Rentals). Self-drive starts at around $72/day (KAYAK small-car average).
For many diaspora visitors, the journey to Cape Coast is the emotional heart of a trip to Ghana. The castles on this coast hold some of the most important and painful history of the Atlantic world. This guide covers the practical side, so you can give the day the time and attention it deserves.
The route at a glance
| Distance | ~165 km (NCRC Ghana distance chart) |
| Drive time | 2.5–3.5 hours each way (Transparent Rentals route guide) |
| Main road | N1 west via Kasoa, Winneba, Saltpond and Mankessim |
| Biggest delay | Kasoa, which can add 30–45 minutes on weekday mornings |
| Best departure | Around 6am |
| Day trip or overnight? | Overnight recommended if you also want to visit Elmina and Kakum |
Leaving Accra and getting through Kasoa
Transparent Rentals' route guide explains that the timing "depends almost entirely on Kasoa": leave at 6am and the drive is nearer 2.5 hours, leave at 9am and 3.5 hours is realistic. After Kasoa the road clears and runs through Winneba, Saltpond and Mankessim before dropping you into Cape Coast.
A safety note on this highway
The US State Department notes that "many accidents occur on the highway from Accra to Cape Coast". The UK FCDO advises travelling during daylight on longer trips outside major cities and not stopping if people at the roadside try to flag you down. Plan to be back in Accra, or settled at your hotel, before dark.
What to see
Cape Coast Castle
Cape Coast Castle is one of the three castles in UNESCO's World Heritage property "Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions", inscribed in 1979. UNESCO describes these sites as fortified trading posts built between 1482 and 1786, which bear witness to the Atlantic slave trade. Guided tours take you through the dungeons and to the "Door of No Return". Allow at least two hours, and longer if you want time for quiet reflection.
Elmina Castle (St George's Castle)
Around 15 minutes further west along the coast, St George's d'Elmina Castle was built in 1482. UNESCO calls it "one of the oldest European buildings outside Europe". Nearby Fort St Jago (Fort Coenraadsburg) overlooks the town and is part of the same World Heritage listing. Elmina's harbour and fishing fleet are worth a slow walk.
Kakum National Park
Kakum is about 33 km north of Cape Coast, according to Town Tools. Its famous canopy walkway is ranger-guided, and tickets are bought at the gate. Go early in the morning for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Wear comfortable shoes, and check current opening times and fees locally, as we couldn't verify an official current price list.
Along the way
- Winneba: a coastal town roughly halfway, handy for a comfort stop.
- Anomabu: home to Fort William, which is also part of the UNESCO listing.
Sample itineraries
One long day (chauffeur recommended)
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 06:00 | Leave Accra |
| 09:00 | Arrive Cape Coast; Cape Coast Castle tour |
| 11:30 | Drive to Elmina; lunch near the harbour |
| 13:00 | Elmina Castle tour |
| 15:00 | Depart for Accra |
| 18:00–19:00 | Back in Accra (depending on Kasoa) |
This is a lot of driving. Having someone else at the wheel lets you rest, especially after an emotionally heavy visit.
Two days (our suggestion)
- Day 1: depart at 6am, Kakum canopy walk in the morning, Cape Coast Castle in the afternoon, overnight in Cape Coast or Elmina.
- Day 2: Elmina Castle and Fort St Jago in the morning, a beach lunch, then back in Accra before dark.
Car hire for this trip
Chauffeur-driven
- Published example: Transparent Rentals lists "Outside Accra" trips (including Cape Coast) from $190, with fixed day-trip rates and no separate mileage charge.
- On an overnight trip, ask whether the driver's accommodation and meals are included or charged separately.
- Confirm the driver's hours, because a long day can exceed a standard 10-hour booking.
Self-drive
- KAYAK's Accra averages (checked October 2026) are about $72–80/day for small and medium cars and about $165/day for an SUV.
- Check the rental's mileage policy: around 330 km for the round trip, plus driving around Cape Coast, Elmina and Kakum.
- Carry your home licence plus a 1949 IDP. See our licence guide.
Fuel and costs to budget
- Fuel (self-drive)
- Castle and park entrance fees (check locally)
- Guide tips
- Meals and water
- Accommodation if you stay overnight
Practical tips
- Start early, at 6am, to beat Kasoa.
- Carry cash in cedis for entry fees, tips and roadside snacks.
- Dress for heat and humidity, and bring water.
- Photography: ask before photographing people, and follow the guides' instructions inside the castles.
- Swimming: the FCDO warns of dangerous rip tides along Ghana's southern coast, so swim only where it's known to be safe.
- Don't drive back after dark. If you're running late, stay over.
Accessibility and comfort
The castles have uneven floors, steps and dark passages. Kakum's walkway involves a hilly walk to the start. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, talk to your driver or tour provider in advance about what's realistic, and consider doing the castles only.
Going further: Cape Coast to Takoradi and the western beaches
If you have a few days, don't turn back at Elmina. The coast road continues west to Sekondi-Takoradi, and Ghana Travel & Tour describes the whole Accra–Takoradi drive as about four hours in reasonable conditions, along the same road through Kasoa, Winneba, Cape Coast and Elmina. Beyond Takoradi lie Busua, Butre and Dixcove, about an hour further west, with long beaches and two more of the old forts.
Fort Metal Cross at Dixcove and Fort Batenstein at Butre are both part of the same UNESCO World Heritage property as Cape Coast and Elmina. Following the forts along the coast gives a powerful sense of how many there were, and how far the trade reached.
If you're going one way, you'll need to arrange the car's return or hire a driver who's happy to make the trip back. Our Kumasi and Takoradi guide covers local hire in the west.
Before you go: some honest preparation
For many diaspora visitors, especially African Americans and Black Britons of Caribbean heritage, the castles are not a sightseeing stop. They can be overwhelming. It helps to know that in advance, and to plan the day accordingly. Give yourself time after the tour. Don't schedule a lively lunch and a two-hour drive straight afterwards if you think you'll want space.
Secure Travel and Tours' Detty December guide mentions PANAFEST commemorations at Cape Coast Castle during the festive season. If you're travelling then, the town will be busier and accommodation tighter, so book ahead.
This is also why we'd gently recommend a driver for this trip in particular. After the dungeons at Cape Coast, very few people want to face Kasoa traffic at the wheel.
