Accra to Ho by Car: Distance, Hours, Route and Car Rental & Hire
Quick answer: To drive from Accra to Ho, take the N2 north from Tema over the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku to Asikuma Junction, then the N5 east into Ho. The Ghana Highway Authority lists the N5 (Adome–Ho) as 40 km, but no official Accra–Ho road distance or journey time is published. Graphic has described Ho Airport as about 165 km or four hours' drive from Accra. There are no scheduled flights to Ho, so plan to go by road and arrive in daylight.
Ho is the capital of the Volta Region. The Ho Municipal Assembly's 2026 budget, published by the Ministry of Finance, says the Assembly was set up by L.I. 2074 of 2012 and that Ho is both its capital and "the Regional Capital of the Volta Region". This guide covers the drive from Accra to Ho: the route, what official sources say about distance and hours, the roadworks on the way, Ho Airport, and how to book car hire & rental with or without a driver.

How far is Ho from Accra?
| Question | What we found (checked 28 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Accra to Ho by road | No official road distance published |
| N5, Adome–Ho (last section into Ho) | 40 km (Ghana Highway Authority) |
| N2, Tema–Bakwu (whole road) | 640 km (Ghana Highway Authority) |
| Ho Airport from Accra | "About 165 kilometres (KM) or four hours' drive" (Graphic, February 2024) |
| Journey time | No official figure published |
The Ghana Highway Authority's road network table lists the N5 from Adome to Ho at 40 km. It doesn't give a figure for Accra to Ho.
In February 2024, Graphic reported that Ho Airport is "about 165 kilometres (KM) or four hours' drive from the national capital, Accra". That figure is for the airport, not Ho town centre, and it's a newspaper figure rather than a measured GHA distance. A 2019 Graphic column put the journey from Accra to Ho at "about 150 or so kilometres".
Route planners and travel blogs give their own distances, but they aren't official sources, so we don't repeat them.
How many hours from Accra to Ho?
We found no official journey time from the Ghana Highway Authority or the Ministry of Roads and Highways. The nearest figure is Graphic's "four hours' drive" to Ho Airport in 2024. The same 2019 column said the drive regularly took the writer three hours, and once four.
Your time will depend on traffic leaving Accra and Tema, roadworks (see below) and stops. Leave early enough to arrive before dark.
The route: N2 to Asikuma Junction, then the N5
The Ghana Highway Authority's 2020 trunk road maps for the Eastern and Volta regions (linked in the Sources list below) show the main route:
- Leave Accra for Tema, where the N2 starts.
- Follow the N2 north through Kpong and Senchi to Atimpoku, and cross the Volta River on the Adomi Bridge.
- Continue on the N2 through Juapong, Abosa and Frankadua to Asikuma Junction.
- Turn east onto the N5 through Sanga, Amenukope, Peki Wudome, Tsito and Sokode Gbogame into Ho.
The N2 carries on north from Asikuma to Peki, Kpeve and Hohoe. That's the road for Hohoe and Wli, not for Ho.
Another road via Juapong. The GHA Volta map also shows a regional road from the Juapong area north-east to Sokode, near Ho. MyJoyOnline reported in January 2026 that preparatory works had started on the road from Sokode through Abutia Kloe to Juapong, to be upgraded to a single-lane bitumen surface. Ask your driver which road is better on the day before you leave.
Roadworks on the Accra–Ho road (checked 28 October 2026)
- Atimpoku–Asikuma Junction. GBC reported on 8 July 2026 that the Ministry of Roads and Highways said the 17.5 km rehabilitation by USSUYA (Ghana) Ltd was 32.3% complete. Work began in December 2025 and is due to finish in December 2027. Works so far include drainage, road widening and pavement layers, so expect construction along this stretch.
- Atimpoku–Ho–Denu. GNA reported in November 2025 that about 177 km of road from Atimpoku to Ho to Denu was being built under the government's Big Push programme, with nine contractors on the stretch.
- Flooding at Juapong. In June 2024, Graphic reported that heavy rain submerged a culvert at Juapong on the Ho–Accra road. About 100 vehicles were stuck between the Adomi Bridge and Juapong. The Ghana Highway Authority reopened the road the next day. If you travel in the rainy season, read our rainy season driving guide.
We found no 2026 report giving a completion date for the whole Atimpoku–Ho corridor.
Is there a flight from Accra to Ho?
Not at the moment. We found no scheduled passenger flights to Ho on 28 October 2026:
- Airlines. Africa World Airlines' website lists Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale as its Ghana destinations. PassionAir's website lists Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Sunyani and Wa. Neither lists Ho.
- History. Graphic reported in February 2024 that the airport had been idle since PassionAir stopped flying the Accra route in March 2022.
- The airport. Ghana Airports Company says the sod was cut in September 2015. The plans included a 1,900-metre runway and a terminal for at least 150,000 passengers a year.
- Plans. In July 2026, the Minister for Transport told a meeting in Ho that the airport would be developed into an aviation academy, with aircraft hangars and a maintenance centre, and that an air taxi service was being considered, GNA reported. He didn't give a date for passenger flights.
Check with the airlines before you plan around a flight. For now, the road is the way to Ho.
Daylight driving
For longer trips outside major cities, the UK FCDO's Ghana safety advice says to travel during daylight hours. It also advises avoiding road travel outside the main towns after dark, when street lighting is poor or non-existent and the risk of serious accidents is much greater.
For the drive to Ho:
- Leave Accra early.
- Allow extra time for the roadworks between Atimpoku and Asikuma Junction.
- Plan to stay the night in Ho rather than drive back after dark.
Our guide to whether it's safe to drive in Ghana has more on road conditions and police checkpoints.
What to see in Ho
- German-era sites. The Assembly's budget lists an ancient German cemetery, an old European church bell and old German buildings at Ho Kpodzi.
- Festivals. It also lists the Yam Festival of the Asogli State, the Sasa festival of Akrofu and the Zendo festival of Klefe.
- Volta Regional Museum. Visit Ghana says Ho has a regional museum where you can learn about the area's history.
Car rental & hire for Accra to Ho
Most people book in Accra and travel to Ho with the same car. Compare firms offering car hire & rental with a driver in Accra.
Self-drive or a driver?
It's a long drive with roadworks on the N2, and a local driver will know the better road on the day. Our self-drive or chauffeur guide sets out the trade-offs. If you drive yourself, check the firm's mileage limits and whether the car may go into the Volta Region.
Agree the terms in writing
Before you leave, agree these in writing (a WhatsApp message or email from the firm is fine):
| Agree in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pickup time and address | So you arrive in daylight |
| Which road the driver will take | Via Asikuma Junction or via Juapong and Sokode |
| Hours included and the overtime charge | So roadwork delays don't become a dispute |
| Fuel, tolls and parking | So you know what's in the price |
| Driver's meals and overnight stay | If you stay a night in Ho rather than drive back after dark |
| Local trips in Ho and the return date | So the firm knows how long you need the car |
Never pay a deposit into a personal account that doesn't match the firm's name. There's no site-wide price list here, because Ghana prices change often. Ask each firm for a dated written quote.
