Accra to the Volta Region by Car: Akosombo, Ho, Hohoe and Wli

4 min read · Last checked: 18 October 2026

Quick answer: To drive from Accra to the Volta Region, most people head north-east towards Akosombo and cross the Volta River on the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku, which Graphic Online describes as the link to Juapong, Ho and Hohoe. Hohoe is about 220 km from Accra and 78 km from Ho, the regional capital (Graphic Online), and Wli Waterfalls is about 280 km from Accra (Visit Ghana). Ho Airport has had no scheduled passenger flights since 2022, so the road is the way in. Drive in daylight, and consider renting or hiring a car with a driver from Accra.

The Volta Region runs along Ghana's eastern border with Togo, from the Volta River and Lake Volta to the hills around Ho, Hohoe and Wli. It's a popular trip for waterfalls, hiking and weekends by the river, and many families in Accra have roots there. This guide covers the route, the distances we could confirm, getting there without a flight, and how to arrange car rental and hire.

The route: Accra to Atimpoku and the Adomi Bridge

From Accra, the usual route heads out through Tema and north towards Akosombo. Just before Akosombo, at Atimpoku, the road crosses the Volta River on the Adomi Bridge. Graphic reported that the bridge reopened in December 2015 after major rehabilitation, and that it links the Eastern Region with Juapong, Ho and Hohoe. Atimpoku is a natural place to stop for a break before you cross.

After the bridge the road divides for the two main destinations:

  • Ho, the regional capital, via Juapong.
  • Hohoe and Wli, further north towards the Togo border.

We couldn't find an official distance or journey time from Accra to Akosombo or Ho, so we don't quote one. Check a live map on the day, because traffic leaving Accra and Tema makes a big difference.

Hohoe and Wli Waterfalls

Hohoe is the main town for the northern Volta hills. Graphic puts it about 220 km from Accra and 78 km from Ho.

Visit Ghana describes Wli Waterfalls, known locally as Agumatsa, as the highest waterfall in West Africa, about 280 km from Accra in Hohoe Municipality. Its directions: from Hohoe, drive east and turn right at Lipke Bakwa to reach Wli in 3 km; the visitor centre is on the edge of the village. The walk to the falls goes through the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, so wear proper shoes.

Is there a flight to Ho?

Not on a regular schedule. A February 2024 report said Ho Airport had been idle since PassionAir stopped its Accra–Ho flights in March 2022. In April 2026, the chairman of Ghana Airports Company Limited said on Joy FM that the airport would "very soon" be put to commercial use, with interest from flight-training investors. Until scheduled flights start, plan to go by road. Firms that offer pickups in the region are listed on our Ho airport transfer page.

Safety on the road

The UK FCDO advises against travelling by road outside the main towns after dark, and the US State Department warns that driving at night outside the major cities is extremely dangerous. For a Volta trip:

  • Leave Accra early, especially if you're going as far as Hohoe or Wli.
  • Plan to stay overnight rather than driving back after dark.
  • Expect hilly, winding roads in the north of the region.

Car rental and hire for the Volta Region

There are very few car rental firms based in the Volta Region on GhanaCarHire: see our Volta Region page for what's listed. Most visitors arrange the car in Accra:

  1. Rent or hire a car with a driver in Accra for the whole trip. Compare firms offering car rental and hire with a driver in Accra. Agree in writing who pays for the driver's room and meals on overnight stays.
  2. Self-drive from Accra if you're confident on Ghana's roads and have your licence and a 1949 International Driving Permit; see our IDP guide.

Tell the firm exactly where you're going (Ho, Hohoe, Wli), how many nights, and whether you'll need the car for local trips once you're there. Prices change often, so check each firm's own page and get a written quote; our guide to how car rental pricing works in Ghana explains what to confirm.
